Feel free to add schools, these are just the ones that I have on my very preliminary list. Thanks for any and all help!

That data is from 8 years ago.... "from 2004" 😱

I just wanted to work on confirming a list. Also, the grading systems often change between years 1/2 and years 3/4 so I wanted to try and capture that data in my list.

Any help or knowledge would be great!

Best,
C

Is Yale the only other top 15 medical school with an open, noncompetitive curriculum? I love the idea of optional lectures.

Also, does anyone know if it's possible to complete a MD/PhD in a social science discipline in 4 years at any top 15 medical schools? (I know that Duke has a third year off program for students passionate about research and grants advanced standing to students with master's degrees in their chosen doctoral path.)

Every lecture is optional.

Some schools have programs for this. U of C, for example, has a specific program that you apply into like MSTP but which allows you to pursue a PhD in the social sciences rather than the biological sciences. As for whether or not you can do it in 4 years (I'm assuming you're talking just about the PhD), I wouldn't count on it. Humanities doctorates seem to be particularly notorious for taking a long time.

True....but there is a PDF on post 14 of that thread that has what you're looking for ca. 2010....not sure how much has changed since then...

Great link, this is what I was looking for, thanks. Also, any info on whether lectures are recorded at these schools? Aka--are lectures recorded electronically and posted somewhere? Please let me know. Here is what I have so far (from 2011 MSAR):

Maryland: Y -- recorded electronically
Georgetown: Y -- recorded electronically

I can tell you from experience that most schools do not require attendance to lectures and that they do record or transcribe the lectures. The only schools that require attendance are ones with a small class size.

State schools tend to have letter grades or a hybrid pass/honors system, while the top ranked private schools tend to be true P/F.

UVA is strict P/F for years 1, 2, and 4. Records of grades are kept for the first two years, but only to verify top 25% status for AOA. No 'coded language' is used to denote class rank in the Dean's Letter. It is a regular A-F scale in year 3.

This list really needs to be alphabetized. It's difficult to check for a specific school without reading every line by line.

Pitt is now P/F for the first 2 years.

One important note: Many schools are P/F the first two years but again, still rank students (most notably for AOA). Some are more stringent. For example, I remember Cornell switched to P/F the first two years but still ranks students in quartiles (top 25%, bottom 25%, etc.) and reports those scores on residency applications.

I think one of the advantages of going to either Harvard or Stanford for medical school is both schools are a completely P/F pre-clinical system without AOA or ranking. Stanford didn't even have clinical grades until 2 years ago. Very few schools can get away with this without it effecting competitiveness of students for residency positions, but those schools continue to match excellently even without AOA. Makes the medical school experienced must less stressful and less competitive.

Not sure why only some schools mention grading during 3/4th years--are there any schools that are NOT H/HP/P/F or equivalent for clinical years? I thought this was universal as it's an important part of residency apps.

Also, UWash is now pass fail.
Sorry, Guero, on my phone and lazy to quote and edit. 🙁

No worries, fixed. Thanks for contributing.

Geffen (ULCA) is P/F for the clinical years. We have Letters of Distinction for each clinical rotations, but it's hard to explain.

Penn State is currently H/HP/P/F but is strongly rumored to become P/F beginning this year (c/o 2017)
