How many of you have graduate degrees (master?s, Ph.Ds)? In what fields? Do you think it made a difference in getting accepted to medical school? Why did you choose to get an advanced degree before applying?

I think it really helps to have a graduate degree. In some fields like microbiology it will really make certain med schools salivate because they can see you going into medical research. Public health wouldn't be bad either.

I think the M.B.A. helped me because sad to say business has become a big part of medicine if only because of the multimillion dollar losses being experienced by hospitals and med schools.

I have a masters on bio and it depends on the school.

I got an MPH, and that IS why I got in where I've gotten in so far.

I have an MS in bio (molecular) and feel that it is a great confidence boost. I think that it not only makes you more confidant when walking into an interview it gives you comfort that you have already completed graduate work.

For whatever it's worth, I thought grad-school was a blast and excited me even more about med-school.

I think it does depend on the school. But the schools where it will help are the schools you want to go to: Stanford, Harvard, Michigan, Duke, Pitt ...........

🙂

I am getting my masters degree in tumor biology. I think that it is helping me, but I think it helped more that after doing not so well on the MCAT....I increased my score by 6 points!

i have an MS in nutrition. i'm sure it's helped, if nothing else, by providing me with additional publications and LOR.
the experience played a part in my decision change career paths and go to med school. and that always comes up in interviews.

MPH...I spent a good portion of my interviews discussing my research, practicum experiences, and the like. Interviewers really seem to like MPH'ers.

I have an MBA, health administration. I think it helps because, as a previous poster mentioned, it gives you a lot of insight into the "business side" of medicine, i.e., public policy, law, economics. You learn a heck of a lot about how insurance works, etc., which only helps at interview time.
