Just curious if anyone knows of any graduate level honor societies, or any other society in general (research? PhDs?) that would take grad students. My grades sucked as an undergrad so never got into any society..haha. But now my grades are nice and happy, so trying to make up for my lack of past distinctions. This is mainly for me rather than for my med school application though. 😀

I also found out that when one graduates from grad school, at least at my school, they don't have any "graduate with honors" type stuff either. Once again, it pays to do well as an undergrad...haha. Which in my case it didn't work out that way😉.

I've not heard of any graduate honor societies. Most graduate students are from the top of their class (both of us can laugh on that one...) so they're expected to do well (B+ or better). Thus, there's no division to base honors on.

But I would investigate professional societies, as many of these will take any student studying their profession, regardless of past academics or place in their education.

there's sigma xi, the scientific research honors society but i think ur school needs 2 have a chapter 2 become a member and its invitation/by nomination only

Thanks everyone. Yea its funny how there are few "rewards" at this level. I wonder if that is the case in med school too..haha.

Anyway, I will definately check out that Sigma Xi thing. I wonder if my PI is in Sigma Xi..haha. I'm sure my school has chapter though.

Well, there ARE rewards at this level. If you work hard, and are lucky, then you'll get a few publications in some good journals. You can be sponsored to go to some of these huge science conferences where you'll make contacts that last a lifetime. You can get your name on some huge grants. The rewards may not be 'John Philip Susa Award for Best Marching Composition,' but they do much of the same things - they divide you from the rest of the pack.

In my med school they have a number of small awards (like $500) for a number of things - best pharm class score, best anatomy test score, best peds clinical rotation, etc. These awards are easy to get because you only have to be a gunner for the few you're interested in. Again, they're another way to separate you from the rest of the pack.
