hey evereyone
I was wondering if the dental school cares whether you graduate during the summer prior to the fall semester in which you want to attend the school. I hope as long as you you have that summer semester done before the first day of class is alright. Anyone else faced with this problem when they were applying?

Any advice would be helpfull.

Remember that a lot of dental schools start in June and July, not August like undergrad institutions. So you probably should shoot to graduate no later than May of the year you are going to matriculate. Other than that as far as I know, it doesn't really matter when you graduate, but I'm not the most knowledgable here, so I could be wrong.

The schools I am going to apply to all start in august as far as I know. But this is for D1 for the 2009 class. Do they start around the same time every year? If I take summer school next year then I will be done by first week of august and the only school that starts the closets to that date is U of Louisville (on the 2nd). I probably won’t be done with graduation ceremony but will have enough credits to graduate.

Remember there is probably a week or two of orientation/equipment distrib. and all that fun stuff before class actually begins. Not to mention the time it will take to find a place to live and move (if you D school is in diff location than undergrad).

Ok but will this tight schedule keep me from getting an acceptance to the school? I think if I go earlier on to the location of school I can find a place to live but I just want to make sure that they don’t reject me because I am graduating in the summer. I would have been done in fall but our stupid chemistry department has a stupid lab schedule, and they don’t offer this class in the spring semester and so I have to take it in the summer.

It might matter if any of those classes you are taking for that summer semester are prereqs. For all the schools I applied to, I was informed that I had to had to finish my prereqs by the spring semester prior to matriculation.

Ohh no it’s not a prereq it is just an upper level chemistry lab (PChem Lab 3). I am actually going to have all my prereqs done by this semester. I am having problems because I am trying to finish in three years so the scheduling is all screwed up.

Why does that bachelor's degree matter that much to you? Did the D-school demand you finish you BS/BA before matriculation? Because otherwise, why bother?

That's question I was gonna ask. On my acceptance letter the school never asks a graduation. However, I heard some school like harvard demands a degree prior to matriculation. My friend went there interview and they are like "Oh you don't have a degree yet, go get a degree and then come back"

I thought they prefer you to finish your degree before you enter school. I have heard that with out a degree you usually need a higher GPA and DAT score. And I mean it’s only a stupid 3 hrs course. I just hope it doesn’t put going to dental school off for a year. Don't you have to put on application the expected graduation semester?

Did you already get accepted? Yes most places "prefer" a degree....but don't demand it out right. So I can't see any school that would accept you balking your admission over a 3 hr non-prereq chem course.

If you don't get accepted or if they demand the degree, then finish the degree.
If you get accepted, and they don't demand the degree, then I say "Oh well, the summer's mine then" and screw the degree.

Yes thats true this lab is not going to make or break me in dental school. But will they let me do that? I really dont care about the chem degree. So if I get accepted I can just say hay I decided to change my mind and I dont want to get my degree. man that would be sweet.

i am SOOO done with undergrad...woot woot

hay you know what this isn't that kind of thread this a thread to figure out my graduation problems. I can't wait for next year none the less.

Congrats Fruity.....

As for you Cows, perhaps you should just relax and call any school you plan to apply to and ask their advice. That would be the best source of information for you.

The only real thing to be careful about, as has been mentioned, is to make sure that your schooling ends in time for dental school to begin.

For example, I graduated from a summer term on June 24 and my dental school began July 24.

It was no big deal at all.

Could be. Ask the schools directly about this. At my school, for example, the prereqs just have to be completed prior to matriculation, not by a specific term/semester.

In fact, I was in dental school for 3-4 weeks before my final grades/degree showed up on an official transcript.

I technically didn't graduate college till a week into dental school.

I had to take 1 music class over the summer to meet a requirement and the degree wasn't issued till august 16th, when dental school started the 9th

so what did you put as the month of the last semester you took? when did the class end ? did you tell them that you would be taking this class? what school was this? are they flexible with you once they give you an acceptance?

please help i am stressing out!!

I got accepted in june while I was taking that summer class. I didn't know that hte upper level music classes i took didn't meet the fine art requirement till 3 weeks before graduation.

I never told the school anything about it and didn't send the final grades to the school or anything. I was already accepted so i didn't figure it mattered to them whether or not i got the degree. I had sent them my spring final grades and they never asked me for anything else, even though my transcript didn't show a degree was awarded.

My anticipated date of graduation was may 2004, so i just left it at that. I don't think it would have mattered if i would have taken that class in the fall while still enrolled at dental school. who knows though.

when did your class end? was it close to first day of D1 class? so i should maybe put july 2006 graduation date as the class ends that time but they have alotted finals till first week of august. they dont realy care if you graduate? thats wierd.

Why is that weird?

I said it was weird because you are essentially promising them on the application the time of your graduation, and if you don’t you have just lied on an application. I thought schools are looking for student who graduates any way. I hope this is not going to be a problem. I have worked way too hard to be able to graduate in 3 years and to have all that washed down the drain because of one stupid class is not cool. I have sent out emails to all the schools I want to apply to, so hopefully I get answers soon.

My advice: dont' stress until you get their responses. I am guessing they are reasonable people and will not keep you out of school for a scheduling problem (unless they start in early July or August). You may just have to apply to schools that start later in the year?

It's not lying. It's just things didn't work out. Just forget about the bachelor's (IF you get admitted then it's of little concern most places) and go for what your goal is.

I will try but knowing me I am still going to stress. I am surprised I don't have white hair yet.

Perhaps Xanax might be a good idea then 😉

No I think a strip club will fix everything.

LOL True....but your girlfriend can't complain about you taking Xanax.

Unless your acceptance letter specifically says that your acceptance is conditional upon your graduation then I wouldn't worry about it. I'm graduating from dental school this month and I just got my bachelor's last September 2004. And the only reason why I got it was because my ortho school wanted me to have one. So my advice is ask the school.

I have sent emails out to all the schools, so far U Penn and U Conn have said that it is ok that I graduate in the August. But BU has said that need me to graduate by the August 1st. I don’t know if they won’t consider me for acceptance if I indicate that I will graduate in the first week of august instead. None of the other schools have sent replies yet (waiting on 7).
