I just received the GRE scores in the mail.
When I opened the envelop and saw my analytical writing score, I couldn't believe my eyes.

3.5

I got 680 on verbal. Although I rushed in argument section of the writing I did well on issue part of the writing.

How important is analytical writing score when applying to PhD programs in clinical psychology?
I got 680 on verbal and 790 on math.

I've also heard it is not important, especially compared to your other gre scores (and yours are great).

Now, if you got a 2.0 and your verbal was low that may give some programs pause.

I also did not do as well as I would have liked on the analytical although my verbal was high. I'm so old I prefer to write first drafts by hand 😉 and I am a horrible typist.

It's not particularly important, because your personal statement is a far better indicator of your writing abilities, but one little point: I realize you are probably writing much less carefully on here than on your GRE, so maybe this point has no relevance, but the statement "I did good on...writing" amused me and might help explain the score if you are prone to that sort of error.

<---- 750 V, 790 Q, Journalism Major, 4.0 analytic writing score (one of these things is not like the others...)

but seriously, no one cares about the writing score.

I'm convinced that the better you do on the GRE, the less admissions care. Okay, maybe I'm being bitter...

I think that this is an intuitively accurate assessment. If you are doing everything right, then it doesn't make you SUPER awesome, it just makes you good enough. However, as soon as you dip below a certain number you are really just beaten with the crap stick. I'm no longer bitter though haha.

They don't really look at the analytical writing portion, unless you have "failed" it.
