To send scores to recipiets, do we need both the Institution and Department codes for the GRE generals?

Some schools have their Departmental code posted on their website.
Does that only apply to the Subject test?

Thanks in advance!

When I took the test last month, I prepared by getting all the codes I thought I would need. It turned out to be a futile exercise. First of all you can't take anything into the test area. Second when you select the schools on the computer, you do so by name and not by code.

Also, just so you know, from a process standpoint, you:
  1. Take the test
  2. Decide whether to accept or cancel the test results
  3. Get your scores (Verbal and Quantitative)
  4. Select the schools for score reporting (by name vs. code)
Hope that helps!

You have to look this up for every school you're applying to. Some require both the department and institution codes, for some you just need institution codes. Each school is different, but it is usually the same for both the subject and general tests for each program.

To clarify, you have to look these up if you are requesting scores after test day. On test day (if you are taking the test on the computer), in my experience, these will be of no use.

Do you guys know about how long it takes for the scores to get to the various schools? Do I need to get them sent out months before application deadlines, or does it just take a couple weeks?

And as as answer to the original question, for the General Test, it's like the other person said above, you pick the schools out by name on the computer while you're in the testing centre, so you don't need to know the codes. You only get to do that for 4 schools though, so if you want to send your scores to more than 4 you'll need to contact ETS later and then you will need the codes. For the subject test you choose 4 schools to send your scores to when you're registering for the test online (or by mail), and you'll need the codes to do that.
