GRE Question

I just received my GRE scores for the new format. It was my first time taking the exam and I received a 158 in Verbal, 153 in Quant., and scored in the 96th (!) percentile for writing. Coupled with a 3.48 GPA and about 500 hours of veterinary experience (large, small, equine, and exotic), how do I stand?

I'm just so confused by the new GRE and how others stack up to it. I'm hoping those of you with vet school acceptances (Congratulations!!) could tell me how I stack up?

You should be able to compare your converted scores with those on the successful applicants thread and get some sort of idea where you stand.
I'm in the same boat you're in, but I don't think anyone accepted this year is going to be able to help much with the new GRE. Most schools didn't accept it for this application cycle.

Your GPA is pretty good, but slightly on the low side for vet school. Most schools have around a 3.6-3.7 average GPA, but that can vary. I know that a lot of schools put heavy emphasis on the last 45 hours, so if you aren't finished with school, you basically need to be a slave and get mostly A's from now on. That being said, I had a low overall GPA and still got accepted. What are your percentile ranks on the GRE? I don't know how the new scores work. In terms of hours, I'd try to get more than 500. It depends on what schools you are interested in, too. For example, the AVERAGE number of hours for UC Davis is somewhere around 3,000 hours. All in all, I'd say you are on the right track! I would mostly focus on gaining more hours, but you have a lot of time to do that.

Well, I apply next cycle so I really don't have too much time, unfortunately. Between school and extracurriculars, I don't have time to intern any time except during the summer. 🙁

I would agree. Your number of hours definitely stand out to me and are an 'easy' area to work on. You can definitely have time if you make room for it! I got over 500 hours in one summer, haha.

If you don't mind me asking, what prep books/courses did you use? I am getting ready to take the New GRE in the next few months and I don't know anyone who has personally taken it to offer up recommendations.

I took the new GRE. I used Kaplan online on demand and got a MUCH higher score on the actual test than on the practice tests. (156 and 154, 70th and 64th percentiles on practice vs 163 on both q and v, 88th and 93rd percentiles) I'm not sure if it's just that Kaplan hasn't quite nailed the new scoring system, or that their tests are much harder. Either way it worked out well for me. I thought Kaplan was really helpful, but I don't have anything to compare it to. I'd be happy to answer more questions if anyone has any!

I just got accepted this year and only had a GPA of 3.32, but I had around 10,000 hours of veterinary experience. So this is the area that I think saved me for having a slightly lower GPA. So I would say work on that for sure as its a pretty easy way to improve your stats. Your GPA is definitely not bad. I'm unfortunately not in tune with the what is good in the new GRE. I hope this helps!

Okay I posted this just now but it didn't show up, so here it is again in a different thread...

I'm taking the GRE tomorrow for the first, and hopefully the only, time tomorrow morning. After practicing with timing for two months, I just took the timed practice test on the ETS website as a final study aid. I found myself struggling with time because the questions were so freakin long.

For those of you who took the GRE already, did you find yourself struggling with time on the actual test? And is the practice test a good indicator of what the real test will be like? Were the scores after the practice test similar to the scores you received on the actual test?

For those of you who took the GRE already, did you find yourself struggling with time on the actual test? And is the practice test a good indicator of what the real test will be like? Were the scores after the practice test similar to the scores you received on the actual test?

I'm trying to remember wayyyyy back in the day (aka this summer). I do believe the time seemed shorter on the actual test then when I practiced. The math I had more "time" in but was harder than when I practiced. By then again, I had a really high percentile (it was either high 80th or low 90th. I'm thinking 162)

As far as verbal goes, I got into the 74th percentile. I HATE verbal- so it seemed like AGONY for me. I took my practice Kaplan tests the weekend before (4 or 5, not recommended lol) and I did ok the first time, really well the 3rd time, and crappy the 4th time.

But yeah. During the test I thought I did crappy and actually did well. The 2nd part will definitely be harder than the 1st

Yes, time is part of what they are testing you on. Anyone can take the GRE with a decent amount of time bc the material isn't really too difficult, but the GRE is literally designed to test your ability to REASON and not actually do the math problem in front of you. That was something I was taught that helped me a lot. I took a sample of the new GRE at the end of my test, but I really didn't pay attention to the new format. I know in the old format for every question you don't complete, you get penalized on your score. At least with the new GRE you can go back to questions. The old GRE, once you went to the next question, there was no way to go back 😱.

I applied and was accepted (just to one school but an acceptance nonetheless) with a 3.14 GPA and GRE scores Verbal - 79%, Quantitative - 91% and Writing - 72% so don't get disheartened by your GPA!

I was nervous as well going into my GRE because I had a hard time getting through the practice test in the time allotted.. The only thing I can say is I'm pretty sure you'll get "in the zone" for tomorrow when you take your test. I remember walking out of there tired, but not dead lol and ended up doing decent on them (although I am taking them again cause I believe my scores could be much more competitive if I truly prepare for it. I hope that it's pre-test day nerves and that the adrenaline rush during the test will help me. I've been studying for over 2 months now and feel I've done everything possible; anything else is all psychological and I won't be able to get over that 🙁
