I am a medical student . I will earn my MD degree next year and I would love to pursue a MD/PhD career.

I am wondering if I would be eligible for PHD program considering that I won't be taking GRE with top result prior to application? my mathematics is awful.

Please help me about result value according PHD program.

Your help is much appreciated

What is your final goal? If it is to practice medicine and do research, you would be best served by obtaining a residency in the USA ASAP. If you do a PhD, you may never be able to gain a residency position as the gap between medical school and residency would be very long. If you do residency now you can obtain a research-oriented fellowship and continue medical and research training that way.

As for GRE score for gaining acceptance to a PhD program, it's going to depend on exactly what PhD program. I really don't know enough about straight PhD admissions to advise you on that point.

hi Neuronix, actually Iam not living in USA,and have to face many problems to get visa.
I love children and research,so my best chance in PHD is PUBLIC HEALTH .
somebody suggested me Tulane, University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, University of Pittsburgh, or John’s Hopkins.
what do you think?
Do you know any fields that are less competitive where I would have higher chances to get a phd position?

You never did answer my question about whether you want to have a clinical component at all to your career. If you do I still recommend continuing your clinical training at this time.

Nevertheless, I cannot directly answer your question about American PhD programs. I do not know enough about the medically related PhD-only programs to comment on their expectations. The focus of these forums is typically on combined MD/PhD programs or research residency training, and not so much on standalone PhD training. Other members are welcome to post, but it is rare that a doctorate level public health student posts on this forum. As a result, you may want to post on a forum other than SDN to see if you can get an answer to your question. You may also want to contact graduate programs directly to see if they will comment on their admissions expectations.

Good luck.

thank you for your attention,to be honest with you I love clinical training 🙁,but as I told you before have to face many problems to get even visa.
I would love to pursue a MD/PHD carrier maybe this is my ultimate goal in this situation .I hope my MD wont hurt me for admission. thanks for your advise

MD is a huge bonus! Your up against kids right out of college. Don't sweat the GRE. If you got through med school, a few weeks of studying and you should be fine.

Most straight-through PhD programs require the GRE. I only applied to grad school and MSTP's, so I took both the MCAT and GRE. There were two schools during my application process that would accept MCAT in lieu of GRE's, but I don't remember which. I think the Johns Hopkins immunology program and some other school. I just don't remember anymore. Basically, most will require the GRE.

Neuronix is right. If you can get a residency in the US, you'll be a lot better off. If you can't, a post-doc somewhere might be a viable option until get a residency, but I can't speak well to that.

Good luck!
