Hi all, I have a few questions about the GRE.

I'll be applying to OTD programs next July (program start in 2018) and I was wondering when the best time to take the GRE was. I was thinking end of June/early July. Thoughts?

Also I was wondering what study resources you found the most helpful and if you created a study plan to keep you on track.

thanks!

I personally took the GRE about 8 months before the cycle opened in July. Just to give me enough wiggle room in case I needed to take it again. I prepared for the test for about 4 months. When you sign up for the GRE, you are able to access practice questions to get a feel for the test. I also read the essays that scored 4s or higher to make sure I knew what the readers were looking for when it came to the writing section.

The important thing with the GRE is that you are well prepared. One month of daily studying at 4+ hours per day if you can fit that in. What I realized after getting accepted to my MSOT program is how much weight schools are putting on the AWA section of the GRE now. Second most important is the verbal section.

I used Magoosh to prepare. It was helpful due to their video rationales/tutorials that were included with each problem. I took and passed the NBCOT in June and I wish that there had been a resource similar to Magoosh for the OT board exam.

I believe that if you are diligent and study an hour or two a day for a couple of months, you should be fine. The GRE isn't some type of boogeyman... you probably took the SAT, much of what you learned then still applies... don't think too much, practice, and every so often take a mock exam (Princeton Review offers a free timed one, so you get a feel for it).

Sounds good. I did my GRE August 2011. Applied that Fall.

Studied for 3 months (the Summer) while doing research and volunteering. Use the summer or any time you have for practice. Just find out the pattern in the math section. There's only a finite types of math questions they will ask. I would suggest doing some practice (online and/or books).
