GRE writing score

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't think you have to convert it yourself, the admissions people will do that...

This is the scale I got from the admissions lady at VMRCVM last year. Other schools are probably different, though.

6.0=800, 5.5=730, 5.0=665, 4.5=600, 4.0=530, 3.5=465

So each score is 65-70 points less than the score above it. Hope this is somewhat helpful!

GRE writing...blech. I got a 6.0 (best you can get) writing on the MCAT, and a 3.5 on the GRE....😕 And it's the same topic formats!

I have a good rule of thumb. If a school cares what you got on your GRE writing, then you dont want to go there.

Problem solved.

hmmm...I thought written communication was an important skill for vets.

Yah but you can write instructions without analyzing an argument.

The grading system for the written thing seems a bit... err, subjective. I'm hoping to do better this time since OKSU counts it, but... I feel like I did betterthan a 4.5 last time. Maybe I didn't use enough of those 'connective words' they adore so much? On the other hand, however, also, in addition, blah blah blah.

Shoot if that's all it took to get a good grade I would've done better than a 3.5! I love 'additionally', 'however', 'anyhow', 'also', etc. I probably use those more than any other words in my papers lol.

dang, I did really well on that section, and didn't do much prep other than skimming the book I sent twelve tigers that discussed the approaches to the two types of assignments. my understanding is that what hurts most people is treating the tasks similarly, not providing support for the one that asks for an argument, and failing to use specifics in the one where you analyze a statement. If you have a basic grasp of grammar combined with an understanding of the tasks, it is suppose to be pretty easy to get at least a 5

as for analyzing arguments.... I thought that reading about new procedures and research required analyzing arguments. Right now I am reading up on vax debates/issues/papers and analyzing the strength of the arguments on various protocols.

It sounds like you have a surplus of awesomeness. Could you spare some for the rest of us common folk?

When it arrives, will you share with me? If I say pretty please?

Well played nyanko. And that is why I still hang around these boards.

"Halp", ha.

I hear the best predictor for how well you score on the writing is the length of your response. They're not really a fan of the succinct essay. Honestly I think if people are going to write a load of bull, it's sooo much better when it's short and sweet.
