As I await my fate on a an alternate list, like so many other students, I have been diligently reading posts in an attempt to remain informed. One thing I have noticed is the striking number of students who report incredible stats and yet so many rejections. This leads me to believe one of two things: A; people just lie about their stats or B; their are a lot of pre-dents with great grades and DAT scores but no charisma or people skills. I think what i'm trying to say here, is that it seems like many of you with such great grades have probably suffered a consequence of your overbearing unsociable persuit of dental school...and that is people skills. I know when i was at my interview i was looking around and thinking, "man what a bunch of loooosers..." because everyone seemed like such a robot. Anways, in my case, my grades and DAT scores are very average, probably even sub-par, and i applied very late, and i still herd from a very competitave public school at which i am now on the waitlist and i think a big reason for this was because of what kind of person i am and because i know how to talk and work with people...not just books. Think about that and leave a post. I'de like to know if anyone else has noticed this.

Haha, what you said is so funny.

I remember going to interviews and thinking half the students there were the biggest losers ever, and I would not go to them if they were a dentist.

Trust me, there are a lot of people with GPAs close to 4.0 that if you were to have a regular conversation with, would seem like the biggest idiots ever.

I was looking around the room at some of the applicants, and I was like, how the hell did these people get an interview?

I remember a few times were during the interviews, a number of applicants would say stupid things in front of the director of admission, and I was like: You are digging yourself in a big hole, just shut up.

If you can get an interview, and you are "very smart socially" if you understand what I mean, your odds are pretty good.

I got good responses from every school I interviewed at and my stats werent astronomical.

Thats why there are ivy schools.😛

way to generalize! i can also generalize and conclude that if all people are like you at temple, then they are all a**holes...

and i would rather choose a nerd than an a**hole

Haha, I didn't notice a difference between applicants in the 2 ivy league schools I got an interview at compared to the regular private ones.

But it is somewhat true. Ivy league schools need students with the highest stats, so they have be able to overlook your social abilities somewhat to get that hightest academic average score.

hah, i get a kick out of these "either or" threads. being academically smart as well as having charisma are NOT mutually exclusive.

you CAN actually have both. shocking isn't it? 😱

if you add humility/modesty to that mix then you're golden 😎

If you're going to troll, you could at least be a little subtle about it, OP. Not to mention that there have been about a gazillion arguments already started by slight variations of your very post! You're not even original!👎

well you know what dude...
I would LOVE to have a 4.0 GPA and 22 all accross on my DAT with ****ty people skills than a freaking 3.01 undergrad GPA (Computer Science w. minors in math) and a good personality. At least in this situation, improving your people skills and interview skills is somewhat workable by attending ALOT OF job interviews (even if its job you don't want to work at) just go to alot of job interviews and it will help your interview skills big time.

But I'll tell you, brining up that 3.0 GPA to something like a 3.3 will take me close to 20 to 25 classes, thats like 2 to 3 years of full time school

I think the reason my GPA is lower is BECAUSE I have what I like to call over-developed social skills, unfortunately those with 4.0's don't usually have that problem...I guess the ones that get both, or think they have both are like gifted or something...that or I was just dropped on my head as a baby...lol

Great stats will get you an interview. Unless your personal statement makes you sound like someone without any ability to interact the interview is your chance to earn your rejection. Dentists need to be able to interact positively with the public and with colleages. If you don't show at the least teh ability to learn to communicate with people then you'll have a problem regardless of what you do. If you are really worried about this then get a job in sales or telemarketing and actually try to do the job for at least a few months. It's good experience.
