I played with a couple friends in a band, although it was pretty informal. It might be worth mentioning, however, that we did throw a charity show for a friend with cystic fibrosis to raise money for her to go to Tanzania to work at an orphanage. It wasn't through any organization, though, and it was a one time thing

If you have something more tangible like that then maybe its ok to put it down. If you say that you've just fooled around in your room with it a few times not so much unless perhaps you were learning for years and just play for fun. I know its confusing but my point is, it should be somewhat significant. Otherwise more generalized hobbies like just strumming a guitar or going to the mall if that is your hobby is something you put when specifically asked about that not in a resume thing. That's how I feel. I feel like the activities section is a resume essentially.

When I was an English comp. student, I voluntarily presented a class project of mine at a panel discussion (comprised of other English students and faculty from the Eng. Dept.) and gave a speech regarding the interpretation of poetry. Is this worth listing in the work/activities section? I'm not trying to add fluff; I write poetry, and I wanted to provide some insight to students, considering that topic is apparently quite daunting (at least in our English classes).

maybe you could add it as a hobby?

say that you write poems and you have been involved in (what you said)....

i'm not completely sure though

I'd echo your suggestion too.

Okay, thanks.

Dear gujuDoc and witness23,
I am almost done with the application.
Quick Q: Formatting presentation_All of them like a resume?????
example: "Arrhythmias: Complete Overview". In-service to Department of Pharmacy Services, XXXXXX Hospital , Washington , DC

Does it sound Ok? Or do I just list title (and not the name of hospital and all)?

And, what about presentations dates? I mean I gave them throughout 2 years...

I think what you did and what your duties were. If you want to add anything extra you can tell them what you larned from your experiences.

Are you a nurse or something? you didn't answer my previous question.

Hey everyone, I'm adding two shadowing experiences under a single entry. However, there were a couple of months separating when I shadowed these two doctors (for instance, January-March, May-July).

Since I'm using a single entry, what should I do in terms of start/end date?

(I would imagine putting January-July, then in the description putting parentheses of dates for each... not sure though)

You answered your own question in the bolded. what you imagine is right on the dot with what you need to do. 🙂

Just give a rough idea of what the date ranges were in the description if it says only a single date for a single presentation and just give a date from the earliest you gave a presentation. Explain the dates and what not in the description better. also, either way you do it for the title will be fine.

the way i listed my presentations (under one category, since i did one talk and one poster in different conf)

Authors/Speakers. "Title." Type of Presentation (Oral/Poster-Platform). Conference Name, Location. Date.

not the guideline way of listing a presentation but not too far from it and it had all the elements that someone may want to know.

What do you think? Is it necessary to list any hobbies? I mean in hobbies section, you just list it...like travelling, museum, movies, research, outing....I don't get this? Do we have to EXPLAIN hobbies? Or can we just leave it blank? I only have 6-7 slots filled

Thanks for the advice, flip26 and gujuDoc. I've combined the leadership and service sections into one single entry for that program, but have left PBK separate because it's more of a national honor than university specific one. LizzyM, if you're around, what are your thoughts?

I've actually changed my traveling entry to just focus on the studying abroad. I read that adcoms like to see you account for your summers, and since my previous traveling pales compared to this, I'll reference those trips if the general topic of traveling comes up in interviews. I'm not sure my state schools offer structured opportunities to conduct research abroad, so I'm hesitant to put that down.

No you don't need to fill all your 15 slots. you don't need to fill out hobbies and I'd personally not put them in there at all unless they are truly significant and you've done a lot with them.

For instance being in a band and actually performing regularly to me is something worth putting down. Being like my friend and touring europe as a musician also worth putting down. I wouldn't waste a spot to put that I go to movies, outing, museums, etc.

Some have put traveling cuz they wanted to show how they are culturally competent and have seen more then their corner of the earth. Also, research is significant. Why do you have that listed as a hobby?

Thanks fo that!
As far as professional memberships (without descriptions) and License + certificate (work-oriented)...can I group all of them in 1 list? And put all under Leadership?
Or should I put all under EC?

I put organizations as EC/avocations. but they were typical school organizations. I'm guessing this is the same. See what LizzyM say to confirm though. Maybe PM her. Also, this is just me but I'd put it under one list, but again PM lizzym about this to see what she says.

Hey, I am about to submit my application. Thanks to you and other SDNmembers.
Any last word of advise before I click SUBMIT?
And, i have not entered any LOR info. But, my writers are aware that I am expecting letters. Unless I am sure which writers I don't want to include, I am not putting any LOR info YET.
Any views?
And, this is how my Work/Activities titles of experience names Look like:
"Awards, tutor, volunteer, ,research assistant, rofessional membership / certificates, research project, Critical care rotation"

Looks ok?

Put the letters later if you need to. Its ok. Last year I did it after submission.

hahahahahhaha...lol (Bollywood!!!!!)
I entered 2 volunteer exp.
1) a meaningful service that pharmacy students provided to kids - A paragraph on it...
2) At hospital - I didn't list any description at all. That's cool, right? I did like 150 hours only. But, ididn't list anything as I dont have m uch to say there at all.....

i would list a description regardless, 150 hours is a lot (to me). i think not having a description sends off a wrong vibe. just my thoughts

Or should I state phrases like:
-Volunteered between March 2005 to June 2006
-Total hours spent= 150
That's it!

Do I also have to list all activities, too?
Or should I just delete it?

no way don't delete it. just describe in a sentence or two what you did. even if its clerical. i know SDN kids have crazy activities and whatnot and that its intimidating but you contributed your time. most important thing is that you know a bit about the hospital environment. even if you think its meaningless in hindsight, it really is more. 150 hours is a lot of time (its a grand on minimum wage pre-tax).

think about one or two good days, your best experiences, and your role in general.

OK, I wrote it up. Thanks for your hinesty. Dude, I got to get this application in before 11:59....................................taking so long!!!!!11

because - I want to get it done with.....I have set-up a deadline for myself......can't waste any more time behind this. Need to review kaplan....

And, while i am thinking if i submit prior to 11:59, it will be counted as submitted date of today....who knows? i just want to get it done with........

What about adding a medical school. I am almost there.....
I have not decided which schools i am gonna pick? But, I am sure of 7 schools where I want to apply. Should I select them now?
Or should I just select 1 for the sake of submiting...and then add all list of schools at same time after taking mcat on july 2????????????????????
Please let me know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
It's almost 10:30....lol

Things you can do after submission:

1. Add more medical schools as long as the deadline hasn't passed.
2. Change contact info in the biographical section
3. Add letters of recommendation and assign them to schools you want to send them too.

If there's more that I'm missing someone like witness23 or somebody feel free to add to my list.

Otherwise there is not much else that you can edit after submission. But adding schools you can do any time post or presubmission.

I am selecting med schools for amcas......and i have reached 23 schools..........entered in system. I am still only half way in msar book.

Suggestions?

Put the letters later if you need to. Its ok. Last year I did it after submission.

It's like even after submission, I will be clueless to how many number of schools should i apply to....
Currently I am just going through this MSAR book, and only applying to residents friendly and top-notch schools....but there are too many!!!!!!!1

diversify your selection. i would use a spreadsheet first and then add med schools on amcas

gujuDoc is right about everything she said in her previous post. I can't think of anything else.

what did she mean by change the contact info in biograph...section?

How many school is tooooo much?
I mean what about 30-35 schools?????????

it really depends on you. selecting 30 schools in a dummy manner will get you bummy results

AS it is past 12...I might as well make a spread ****, but still the numbers will fall between 30 to 40 med schools. If money and time are not issues, how extreme can you go to have balanced outcome? I mean I was thinking if I apply to 40 schools and get interviews at even 1, that's pretty good.....of course under assumption that I have no hope....That's why I am planning to apply to all. If I knew how significant MCAT cutoff can play and if I had MCAT scores in my hand, it would be easier....But, since my score will be released in aug, i am clueless!

This is not something that you should rush. Pick one school for now. There is plenty of time to add others.

I agree that I can just select 1 now and add more later.
But, I was reading everywhere Apply early Apply Early.......I mean I am already planning to delay my 1st time MCAT in July (3rd or 4th wk) from july 2nd.......On the top, I didn't want to delay this selection of med school 2...............
Call me crazy but what can i do? how can I simplify the med school selection? That, I don't know. So, far I am planning for PA, MD, IL, CA, MI, DC, NJ, NY, MA, CT = 37 schools

I reached 37 schools.

In addition, I am considering VA, TX, WA = 12 schools.
I am only focusing on residents friendly schools and states and locations of my choice..........

Schools are not going to touch your application until your MCAT scores are in. Add schools later.

I see. Thanks for the responses.
I guess currently I will just add my state's school and 2-3 others.
That's it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm having trouble picking only 15 things for my activity list.

1. Out of all the categories, would you say “awards/honours/recognitions” is the least important since my academic abilities should be evident? I'm going to include a national award under this category, but there are other university awards/scholarships that I just don't have room for.

2. I have been playing the piano for the past ten years and I have volunteered as a piano teacher at a local arts program for disadvantaged children. Is it too much of a stretch to group together each 2 things as either community volunteer or artistic endeavor?

Thanks in advance!

I hate to post another question instead of a reply to the previous questions, but I also wanted to ask this before I forget. When people refer to a bullet-form layout I take they mean this (for example):

- Volunteered at the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Pediatrics Activity Center (PAC).
- In the ICU, I did blah blah
- In the PAC, I did blah blah

But what about where the fragments are separated by periods (kind of like resume-style)? Is it ok to use sentence fragments? Example:

Volunteered at the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Pediatrics Activity Center (PAC). In the ICU, served as blah. In the PAC, helped patients blah.

Thank you much

Yes it is ok to do that.

On a side note, isn't it kinda funny how anal we become about these things?? LOL. But yes all 3 styles are fine. You will be ok. I reviewed the EC section for someone who used precisely the style you are referring to. And anyhow as an accepted resume style of writing that should definitely be ok.

i worked in petroleum engineering.
basically i worked at an oilrig. how specific should i be in describing what i did?

i think what i did was kind of unique, but i'm not sure how in detailed they want it

I don't know how much this is going to help you, but as detailed as you feel you need to give them to bring your point across.

I will get back to you later if you can wait, but yes grouping some of your activities might be what you have to do. If you have no choice then try to group the piano thing together. Maybe you can do that with a few other things if running out of space. I'll get back to this if you give more details when I come back from tampa today.

Quick question: If I have been making care packages for troops overseas through AnySoldier.com, can I (should I) list that as an activity? If so, what should I put for the contact information, since I don't really report to anyone (it's an independent thing through the website)?

Question. I am going to TA for a molecular genetics class next semester for 3 credits.'m going to be grading texts, making worksheets, study guides.. I put it as a current/future under my classes but can I also put it under work/activities? Like I said it is only for credit. I am not getting paid. It will be a GREAT talking point for me in interviews so I want them to see it on my application 😀 Also, is it okay for me to put it under work/activities if it is going to occur all this upcoming fall semester?

Thanks

Yes but it is still teaching experience. If people can put travel abroad for study abroad purposes under activities, my guess is you can also put TAing down. I'd put it in the activities section. I think it is valid. I'd list it as teaching and use the things you said you'd be doing in the description of your job.

getting paid, volunteering, doing it for credit, it is still a work/activity thing worth putting on.

I'm not sure if they let you put things that are in the future. I think I remember them not letting me put a future date that hasn't happened yet. However, what you can do is put it in secondaries where there is space to put it on things that are not on amcas in your secondaries, where they ask for leadership activities, or where they ask for any extraneous information you want them to know. Alternatively you can send a letter of update to all schools applying to
