Hi, I'm an IMG with F-1visa in US. I wander if I should get greed card (perment resident) before going to match, or match as soon as possible and hope to get H-1 visa?
Thanks in advance.

Every IMG's Dilemma... the dreaded Green Card !!
Well, the answer to your question is an easy one. It all depends on when you can secure a Green Card ?? There is no doubt in mind that having a Green Card, is by far your best option. It gives you an upper hand when it comes to applying to the match, interview season, and the match itself. However, for the most part, the option of securing a green card is not that simple. And that's where the H-1 comes in. So to make a long story short, depending on when you will be applying for the match, and when in that time frame will you be securing a GC. If you can manage to secure it before the match season, then by all means go for it. Otherwise, pursuing the H-1 is definately the better option. Don't forget that these things take time, so make a decision and start on it fast.
Lots of Luck.

So can the fact that one has or doesn't have a green card mean the difference between gettting in and not getting in?

Hi Asavil

A Scandinavian jumping the pond? This I gotta hear more about. I'm jumping it, too.

Regarding this whole green card thing, I think it makes a big difference if you apply to a small program. Some of the these programs don't sponsor visas at all (their web sites will say so). I'm not sure it makes a difference at a big img-friendly program. They are probably so used to processing visa sponsorships that a green card only makes a slight difference to them.

On the other hand, if you could get a green card, why wouldn't you?

Asavil,
It is my opinion that having a Green Card, can definatley influence you in many ways. At the very start, there are many programs out there that simply DO NOT sponsor any visas. When it comes time to start applying, you'll find many programs that you might wish to apply for, but you simply CAN NOT, because of your Green Card status, or lack of. Simply put, that to me, makes a huge difference.
Visa sponsorship by not doubt is looked upon as a burden by all programs. Regardless of how often the programs sponsor a visa, there are still many unpredicatble outcomes of the entire visa process. Some of which could delay your paperwork, and hence delay your start date.
Simply put, if you have the opportunity to get a Green Card then go for it.

What is the way to secure green card?

For some reason, the last question brought to my mind a joke that i saw in newsweek: A reporter asks an American, an Afghan and an Iraqi "what's your opinion on electricity shortage?"
The American says" what's an electricity shortage"?
The Afghan says" what's electricity"?
The Iraqi says" what's an opinion"?
