Hello everyone,

I received a holiday card with a handwritten note from the program director stating that they would love to see me there next year. I am wondering how I should respond to this. On the one hand, I would like to email them to acknowledge receipt of the card, to thank them for having sent it and to wish them a Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays/New Year. However, I still don't know whether I will be ranking this program my number 1 and writing 'I will be ranking you highly' sounds like it could fall flat. Is it best to not send any email correspondence acknowledging receipt of the card at all? All advice appreciated! Thanks.

Programs are cautioned to not make statements that will be misconstrued as a promise to give you a position. You are right, the "rank you highly" does sound like "your my third favorite program!" I would either do nothing, or just wish them Happy Holidays back and nothing more.

"I would love to see you too" doesn't sound terribly bad either if it's true. You may love to see someone else more. Listen to the PDs though. I'm several years out of that world.

Doesn't replying 'Happy Holidays', leave them thinking I'm not as interested in them? Doing nothing also could leave them thinking the same or even worse that I'm discourteous or unappreciative... Hmm. I do like sunlioness' suggestion though. Am i overthinking this?

Probably. Programs that send emails like that are either being nice or making you feel loved in hopes of your ranking them higher.

What they are NOT doing is sending out emails to compile responses for analysis to affect their ranking list.

I agree that "I'm ranking you highly" is not helpful. Leave ranking out of it. Like sunlioness said, if you liked the program and would really love to train there, say so. It's honest and does not imply that they are the only program you'd love to train at.

Thinking to yourself "it's nice to be wanted" is about as much thought I recommend putting into this.
