This summer I will be fortunate enough to be a TA for gross anatomy. I wanted to learn what students who have taken gross have to say about their TAs. What could your TA have done to make gross anatomy a better experience for you? What did you not like? If you could tell them exactly what you wanted what would it be?

For instance when i took gross I would have wanted the TAs to
1) walk around more and ask if we needed help.
2) give us more example problems of what might appear on the written test
3) walk around during presentations to make sure presented information was accurate

Only help if requested. I was SO annoyed with the TA's. If I'm holding the heart, quietly reciting the chambers, musculature, vasculature, etc., and minding my own business, I would not appreciate a TA coming up and "shotgun" quizzing me on the lower abdomen.

I remember quite a few times I would ask a TA what structure I was looking at. She would say, "you tell me. What do you think? Think about it." Thanks, anyway. The TA should guide the student to the right answer, but should at some point give the student the right answer. I remember sometimes I didn't even bother to ask. Of course, some TA's were more helpful than others.

I think it's important to find a good balance between being a jerk who isn't helpful at all (much like NewTestament described) and being overly helpful and not allowing me to think for myself. My TA was really good, but she was only with us in the lab. She was helpful because she actually taught us where the structures were, helped us relate it to what we talked about in lecture (and then was also able to give a clinical pearl/nugget of knowledge) and then was good about asking us questions about the structures to help us make connections.
