GS and Class Rank

Based on anyone's experience or credible sources, what do you think the average rank for someone wanting to enter a reputable GS Program (Baylor, Duke, Stanford etc.) would be? I was told that you should be in top 10%, but then I have other people who say top 5 in the class...not top 5%. What weight do you think rank has in terms of gaining a good residency? How about ranking and USMLE scores? Meaning, if you were highly ranked (Top 5) and had a S1 score of say...230, would that be better than someone who is ranked say...number 20 with a S1 of 250? I only say this because I would like to possibly pursue CT surgery in the future and want to get some advice on where I should be/apply. Thank you in advance.

I'm pretty sure either would gain you an interview at all programs where you may be interested. From there, it is your personality and how well you'd mesh with the program that will be greater factors in determining if you match at a particular program.
