Hey everyone,

I just got back to CA after a week in DC (looking for housing) and I must say I'm really excited to start this year! Washington seems like it'll be an awesome city to go to school in cuz there is so much going on all the time an it's so diverse. The school is beautiful (although I see what people mean about some of the facilities) and Ms. Cabiness is wonderful! Oh and I saw John Edwards jogging down by the Potomac, kinda funny. Of course I'll probably be feeling less excited once the stress and winter begin, but for now I'm really looking forward to it.

After much deliberating, I chose to live in Rosslyn, and I wanted to see if anyone else was looking at places there, or has lived there and can tell me if this was a good choice. See, I wanted to live close to school (no car) and by myself. Most of the places available in georgetown are shared housing or basement apts, (or ridiculously expensive!). Maybe I just got there too late to find something, I don't know. Rosslyn, is relatively close and has good access to a lot of things and the apt I found is great, but I'm afraid of being "out of the loop", socially. I heard from one of my friends who went thru the program that it's a little harder to keep track of what everyone's doing when you live alone or farther from georgetown, but it's all good if I "make the effort". What do you think? And by the way, this is not a huge worry because I know I'm there for academic purposes, etc, but I just wanted to see what people thought of this.

I didn't put the SMP on my AMCAS...is this a big problem, since Gtown will send all my schools a letter regarding the program at the beginning of the semester anyway?

Hey I was actually planning on living there (or around there) too. I'm securing housing this week... can either of you give me any details? I found some places in the area on craigslist.. Is Rosslyn a nice place to live? I don't think I'll be able to make it out there until Aug., so I will have to secure my housing before actually heading out there. Any tips/advice?

It's too bad you can't go there before securing housing, but since you can't, I'll do my best to tell you what I know about Rosslyn. It's a nice area to live in because it's relatively clean, and it's really close to Georgetown with semi-cheaper housing. It's located right across the Potomac river (you just cross Key Bridge) and I'd say a little over a mile from Gtown. I timed the walk from River Place to the main campus and it's ~20 minutes (leisurely pace). Of course, this is not an option in winter! It has a grocery store, metro station, GUTS stop, and a bunch of shops all nearby, so you have access to a lot of things. The only thing is that Rosslyn is not very "happening" and I think most people live right by school, so if you wanna go out at night you're likely to have to take the metro, taxi, walk, etc. Keep this in mind also if you like to study in groups.

As for River Place, it's very hard to tell what you're gonna get. The apts are individually owned so cleanliness and quality depend on the landlord. Some of the places I saw there were really dated and kinda dirty, but others were much nicer. I'd ask the landlord to send pictures of the place, if possible (although you can't always tell even then). Do you know anyone in the area that could go look at the places for you?

Would any guys be interested in looking for housing together? I would like to live with other physios, but I won't be able to make it to this housing weekend, and I probably won't be able to go up to DC before Aug. I talked to one woman in Arlington who has a 4 person house that she rents as a whole for $2300 (650, 575, 550, 525). I don't know if people want to live in Arlington, but I believe it's on the GUTS line. But that's just one idea. either reply on here or email me at [email protected] if you are even slightly interested.

when i did the smp i lived with four others from my class and two other grad students; it was awesome to have a group of your classmates at home most of the time

i highly suggest this; some people go nuts living alone...
 
Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone else is currently on the Georgetown Med School waitlist?? It is unlikely that I could get off that waitlist if I have already sent in my deposit for the SMP???

GT SOM and GT SMP are two separate entities. Having paid your deposit to the SMP will not improve nor hinder your chances of getting off your SOM waitlist.
 
For anyone else working on the UIC secondary: It says, "If you are currently enrolled in a graduate program or professional school, one of your three letters of recommendation must be from a faculty member at your graduate or professional school."

Does that apply to us, and if so, will this delay our application since the SMP faculty probably won't be able to write us a letter until at least the end of 1st semester? I'm gonna call UIC, but if anyone knows right off the bat, please let me know. I'll come back with any info I find.

Edit: Hey, just FYI, I called and they said that we don't need to submit a letter from the SMP program... so nevermind 😳 Hope I helped more than just myself 😀

If you go to the registrar's office at GT, technically, we're not enrolled at this time.

I think they register us for all of our classes so we don't need to worry about that.

Does anyone have any idea what kind of stuff we are doing for orientation and how long we will be there on those days?

I'm not sure how long it will go each day, but talking to Ms. Cabiness she said she didn't think it needed to be 2 days long. Apparently it will be a lot of what we already know. I'm guessing part of it will be going over the curriculum, school, and med school app process.
 
I have a question for those of you who were accepted early and put the coursework for the SMP on the AMCAS. For the transcript request, did you check the box that said the transcript from Georgetown is not required? If so, after you submitted your AMCAS, how long did it say "exception request pending" next to Georgetown. My AMCAS has been "active" for some time, but I'm afraid this exception request is causing my application from being "processed". Did anyone go about this the same way I did and has your AMCAS been "processed"?

yea, i did it the same way and my application was processed a couple days ago. It shouldn't delay your application.

I also did the same and it only took 6 days for application to process and i submitted it in mid july. you should have no problem stemming from that.

I am living in Burleith with another SMP buddy. I've already moved in but my roommate will be here August 5th. Just trying to get a lot of rest before school starts. 🙂

I just got in recently and am seriously stressed out about finding a place to live, moving, and getting settled in just two weeks... eeek!
 
I'll be in Dupont Circle. One of my friends who is also coming to the program will be living in the same vicinity about a street down from me. Yes, I know... not too close to campus and not as many students, but I figure I'll be better off with more autonomy... actually, I have a feeling that I'll end up in the library most of the day! Looking forward to meeting you all at orientation... I should be getting in on the morning of the 9th to set up my place.

Anybody else sort of nervous about the workload?

I need to get caught up on secondaries before I get out there!
 
I'll be in Burleith too, in one of the many basement apartments. Can't move into my place til the 13th, so I am going to be crashing with friends until then.

hey, congrats - seems like you were really hoping to get in and that the only thing holding you back was that you applied a little late. good to hear.


have any of you guys been verified for a while but not received many secondaries yet? i've only gotten 4 out of 20 and i really want to get these bitches out of the way before i get to DC. blah, schools were a lot quicker last year. 👎
 
I got verified last week, but I agree that secondaries have been a little slower this year. I've gotten 9 out of 19 so far, I want to have all those sent in before I leave for DC.

Thanks for the advice 🙂 I checked it out and it's helpful, but my situation is complicated by the fact that I have cats, so it's a little tougher to find housing. I was thinking of living in Dupont, too, MD rapper, since the shuttle goes there and everything. We'll see what happens... I am going to DC next week to search.

Thank you! I am excited. It's a little intimidating because I live in Boston currently and was accepted to the BU program, too, and that's just... easier. It would be easier to stay here. But BU doesn't really support applications during the first year as well as G'town does, and I don't want to wait another year, and G'town is such a great program... so I'm going to take the plunge. It'll be fun, I hope 🙂

BU's program is not mandatory two years, but it is nice because if you don't get in right away after your first year, you stay on as a paid research assistant to finish a thesis, and also have the option of getting an MPH degree, so really, you are getting two degrees in two years, making money, and also, if you do really well in the program, you may get one of the 30-40 spots that they reserve per year in BUSM for graduates of GMS. The success rate for BU is very high for allopathic schools- 85% get in after two years. More would get in during the first year, but not many people apply then.

Georgetown I feel is less of a good program because it doesn't have as strong of a relationship with its own med school as Finch and BU both do. They only take 10-15 SMP students per year into their med school, which is a lot less than BU's 30-40 and Finch's 30-50. Also, once you graduate, if you didn't get in your first year, you don't have the support and built-in work options that you would have at BU.

I am going to BU, and I'm excited about it. I know nothing of Finch's program, but between BU and G'town, I think I made the right choice...

im confused...you posted this awhile ago but you say you just got your acceptance? Seemed like sour grapes when you wrote about GT saying you felt BU was the better program but now that you got into GT, you decided to go there...

Hmm. I found out some thing about BU's program that I didn't like. I was also probably trying to psych myself up for BU since that's where I thought I was going. I'm still not 100% sure which one I will attend, but either way, they're both good programs.

Since this is your only post on SDN ever, and you dredged up my post from another thread and almost three weeks ago, I am wondering what your purpose is for posting on this thread. You're not adding any pertinent information regarding G'town, and your existence at SDN seems to be centered around ****-stirring. Care to explain yourself?

Yeah, I'm a troller and I dont post but after reading about how you weighed BU against GT before you even got into GT (in fact, put on the wait list) and felt BU was the 'better choice' and then once you got into SMP you immediately ditched BU...just doesn't seem to reflect well on you.

It's as if you bashed GT because you didn't get in to make yourself feel better...which is ok but 1.) you said it as if you had a choice between the two, ie, you were granted acceptances to both institutions (in which you didn't at the time of the posting) and 2.) you made it seem like GT was the inferior program while you quickly accepted their offer once it came.

I just felt that you showed poor character and couldn't help put posting about it.

Congrats on getting into the SMP stinkycheese. Just out of curiosity, what was the "something" that you didn't like about BU's program?

oh stinky, congrats on your acceptance! I was sure you'd eventually get one 🙂 And you said you'll have cats! I'm gonna have to come and see them every once in a while since I can't bring my kitty with me and will be in serious withdrawal 🙁 Good luck searching for housing.

To everyone else: I didn't want to bring this up, but then I though, why not? My bday is on August 17 = the 2nd day of class 🙁. Would any of my future classmates like to celebrate it with me? 😳 😳 I don't know where or when, but we can figure it out. Anyway, I'm sure people want to get together and go out before school starts in any case.

Oh and by the way, I'm moving in on August 5th and so far am drowning in unfinished secondaries (I applied to 30 schools)!

Hey guys, I heard that during all of Orientation weekend, there will be bar-hopping events with the Med students, so definitely announce your birthdays then and we'll get a big group out to celebrate. Yay!

The things I found out about BU that I didn't like included the much higher cost than SMP, the fact that they don't really support same-year appys (and I am definitely applying this year), and that you're not guaranteed to get some of the med school courses- they get filled up quickly. My point in going to one of these programs is to show that I can handle a med school load, so it's important that I get these courses. 🙂
