Hola, Familia!

My name is Abe, and I’m reaching out with deep gratitude and big dreams.

Growing up in a chaotic household shaped by mental illness — both of my parents struggled with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder — I battled depression, anxiety, and obesity from an early age. By 27, I had dropped out of school, cycled through jobs, experienced homelessness, and reached nearly 400 pounds. That was my rock bottom.

Since then, I’ve spent the past six years completely transforming my life: I’ve lost over 200 pounds, confronted my trauma, and rediscovered a profound sense of purpose.

Today, my calling is clear. I want to fuse culinary arts, medicine, and science to help adolescents facing similar mental health and lifestyle challenges. I’m especially passionate about food’s power to heal, connect, and empower. I’m captivated by the miracles of medicine, the elegance of neuroscience, and the potential to change lives through holistic care.

I plan to pursue a BS in Culinary Nutrition at JWU while completing the necessary science prerequisites for medical school. My long-term goal is to pursue an MD/PhD in psychiatry and adolescent behavioral neuroscience, with a focus on integrating culinary medicine into mental health treatment and prevention.

In addition to my academic goals, I’m committed to personal growth and service. I practice yoga, meditation, strength training, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Salsa dancing is my way of decompressing and building community. I also volunteer with Austin Angels to advocate for foster children in my area — a cause close to my heart.

As I prepare to take this next step, I’m seeking guidance:
  • How can I best prepare for medical school while completing the culinary nutrition program?
  • Are there gaps I should begin addressing now — such as research, clinical experience, or shadowing?
  • Would you recommend any specific programs, advisors, or timelines to stay on track?
I’ve done a great deal of research on my own, but the deeper I go, the more questions I uncover. I would truly appreciate any insights or direction you can provide.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story and consider my path. I’m excited to learn, grow, and hopefully one day give back in ways that reflect the healing I’ve received.

Warmly,

Abe
