  1. Attending Physician
As all of you know, the RRC has evaluated pediatric residencies and decided that "we" just don't know enough non-pediatric medicine. Beginning this July, all residents will be required to spend 3 months before graduating in a non-pediatric field working as an intern so as to broaden our horizens. Please indicate your choice in the poll above and post here and explain why. You can also tell us your last choice....

Do we have to choose only one of the above mentioned specialties which are all primary care specialties or the RRC allows for the 3 months to be spent in a medical or surrgical subspecialty like cardio, gi or even specialties like derm, anesthesia, radiology etc?? thanks

Sorry, no specialties and not even pedi pysch. We have to be "real" doctors, so 3 months in derm wouldn't qualify.:meanie:

oh yes, and surgery would be my "last" choice.

The Navy already does something close to this so that all of our docs are prepared to take care of Sailors and Marines in case you end up as the doc on a ship after your internship (like me).

Every intern at my hospital, regardless of specialty, spends a month on OB/GYN, a month in ortho, and month in the General ER.

Ortho and general ER aren't too too far from peds and at least the GYN part can apply to adolescents.

thanks for the reply oldbearprofessor!!🙂 surgery no way!!!!

Ummmm....please tell me you are kidding...If not, would you please send me the link with the statement? Thanks so much!

Adults...😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

If I had to, I would probably choose Psych or IM first and it's a toss-up between OB/GYN and surgery for last.

Interesting idea (for civilian residency programs). I definitely see the point in having broad subspecialty exposure during intern year in a military program. I really don't remember hearing about this at any of my interviews, and can't recall any of the curriculum/rotation schedules they give us in those packets having three months set aside for rotations in a different specialty. I doubt this would explictly apply to combined residents because some (if not all? e.g., I am not sure how the combined genetics, PM&R, etc. residency programs are set up) would already have at least three months' worth of intern-level rotations in some other specialty already built in to the curriculum.

Where do they post announcements like this? I went to the Pediatrics RRC section of the ACGME web site and didn't see anything.

You have to look very carefully.

Me? Kid? Never. Pediatrics is serious business.

I was hoping this was an April Fool's joke...I looked on the peds RRC website and saw nothing...even though I knew I was wasting my time...I love it...If I actually had to do this, I might just stroke out...I have tried to avoid adults for the last few months of medical school...Whew...

You sneaky April Firster!!!!

I would do 3 months of surgery. Because I've already done a year of surgery internship and would finagle a way of making that time count for something, dammit.

Blast! I fell for it! Damn this day and its tomfoolery!

Since I was torn between surgery and peds (I know, I am a hot mess...), I'd happily go back to the OR (Can I do peds surg?)

WOW! Nice one!

Unfortunately, mine wasn't an April fools joke and I did do those rotations. . .

Strong work OBP. . .

Ahhhh aprils fools! i cant believe i fell for it. wait, yes, i can im gullible. hahah. well let's just say im very relieved it's not for real!!

Can I do neonatology? It's kinda like Pediatrics...

Sorry, can't figure out how to do that. But, I know you won't try to cheat and get out of a month inpatient MICU!

Cheating...ha! What do you take me for? 🙂 The only non-pediatrics and non-psychiatry rotation is adult neurology, but neuro is integral to the field so I don't personally consider that to be an off-service type of rotation! At any rate, no medicine rotations = no MICU for me. 😀

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh. This one really freaked me out!

I'm SO gullible. 🙁

If you do an Osteopathic Pediatrics Residency you are required to do adult medicine months during your intern year!

Is this true of dual accredited residencies? My understanding was that all but a couple osteopathic pediatric residencies are dual accredited. Actually, if you want, start a thread about this issue. I don't know much about the osteopathic pedi residencies and I can't ever remember a thread about them.

Hats off to you, kind Sir. Well played. 😛

You didn't vote? I had you pegged for psych for sure.😉

wow that was a good one. we had some peds residents do a Q&A panel over the lunch hour yesterday (4/1) and I almost asked them what they thought of this new requirement, phew! 😱
