To the OP - my advice would be to check out several types of pistols from different manufacturers and see what you like best.
There are some good recs here for some people, but they're not all for everyone. For example, I know Glocks are good weapons, but I despise them personally. I love revolvers, but lots of people wouldn't. It doesn't make them any less good weapons; just personal preference.
The gun has to point well for you, and be something you're willing to trust your life to. I hate double action weapons - whether that's a Glock or a bobbed-hammer revolver, doesn't matter. You may be completely opposite.
Shop around. Gun shows are great, because there's a good selection, and you can pick them up and see how they feel.
