Anybody have a gunner that tries to screw all their classmates at the same time, and tells people what they were doing? I just find it funny and unbelievable that some people don't mind having the entire class as their enemy. I want to hear some other stories.
This is what happened in my class, and it's only been a few months in year 1. This person felt that it was unfair to him that the professor gave points back to everyone after a ridiculously hard exam which half the class failed because I guess he did good. His intentions are to complain to the dean if the professors don't reduce the amount of points given back to the students. Of course he will not get his way, but I just can't believe that someone would try and screw over his fellow classmates just so he can get to the top of the class.
Also, how do professors view gunners?

Hmmm, if the prof gave points back to everyone then the gunner got them too so he's still the top of his class.

Right, but before there were few people who had A's, now there are many more. Basically he doesn't want a lot of people to have A's if he gets one.

Ugh I hate gunners. I guess every class has them. I am more of the "I want to do really well but I also want everyone else to do well" and "I know I wont be Number 1 no matter how hard I try" type of guy. What really pisses me off is when people call me a gunner when I am just a hard worker... and like to be ahead in lab - def not a gunner because I never screw people over and send out an outline and study guide for every single f-ing lecture on the class list serve! SO THERE YOU GO HATERS! BACK OFF, IM NOT EVEN SPECIALIZING! . . . punks...

But, gunners in my class. . . We have this kid that makes it known to everyone he is doing oral surgery. Not a "Oh, I think I am going to try and do oral surgery" but "I am doing oral surgery because i want to be an MD without going to med school and I am going to make TONS OF MONEY." Yeah one of those. Said gunner made a complaint to the course director of each class saying that he thinks that we should have more questions on each test because our class doesn't think we are being adequately tested on the material taught to us and we all feel cheated (we have about ~4-6 questions per lecture on our once a month exams).

ANDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD Said gunner, while making the other complaint, said he wanted to make sure the professors stopped repeating questions on their exams because this also made our class feel cheated (Yeah, we get all of our exams back and we pass them down to the next year - it is encouraged by most faculty...You know the whole "published" and "public" documents thing like the MBDE does)

Super gunner

Some people have no idea that their behavior is incredibly crass. Individually, some classmates should talk to the gunner, and tell him/her something to the effect of : there's no doubt you're #1, not everyone is as gifted as you, you will for sure be an OMS (or whatever speciality), please do not make it more harder for the people who are just trying their best to graduate and provide for their families.

Gunners feed off the "me against the class mentality", if you cut that away by unequivocally acknowledging their awesomeness. You will have a great shot at him continuing to study 24/7, without purposely screwing over the rest of the class. It's turned our once obnoxious gunner into our lovable gunner. It's worth a shot. If that doesn't work, then F*** 'em. I think it's virtually impossible to stay #1 for four years without receiving one iota of help from any classmate.

part of gunner behavior is a total lack of self-awareness....not in the sense that he/she does not understand what they are doing, but the fact of how ******ed he/she looks in the eyes of everyone else.

to be clear, it's one thing to strive to excel academically, it's another to be a douchebag about it.

DS1 here too.... we have 97 students, I am sure some will be gunners (I am betting about 30 are today) but..... I haven't seen nor heard of anything resembling what you just said. Everyone is super chill here, everyone helps everyone else with questions / explanations and whatnot.

But then again, my school has that "clinical" reputation going for it, I wouldn't be surprised if 80-90%+ of my class went into GP.

Okay.... But how can I do what you say, then gunthemdown and take their number one spot?

😛 <- smiley emoticon to make sure everyone knows that the above comment was sarcasm.

Spot on chap. Lack of self-awareness. Like, "Hey, those blue-tooth headphones you wear in class, during a lecture, all day everyday, aren't cool, they make you look even MORE like a d-bagowicz"

First year gunners think they're hot shots and act like they have something to prove. Wait until 4th year and see how many of them are actually still top of the class. There were plenty of people my first few months who my friends and I had pegged as valedictorian material -- more than one barely graduated.

if said gunner is reading this he's totally coming after you next...hopefully he can't connect ur subtle clues

I think the point of the thread was to find a solution to stop people from screwing over the entire class.

Why does what someone wears during class bother you so much to call them a D-bag? Who cares?

The behavior that needs to be addressed to any student is if they do something to screw the class.

As long as they don't screw over the class, who cares what they do or say or wear?

I've heard similar things. Like your DS1 class rank usually changes from year to year. And the changes many times are not subtle (top 10% to midway and vice versa)

It probably depends on burn outs, people just not carrying any more while others picking up their slack and.... I've also heard that clinical years play a big role as well.

Well... nothing you can do about it other than alienating that individual. He is shooting himself in the foot, when clinical years come, no one is going to wanna be his assistant, and if they are forced to, theyr not gonna make his work easy.

I don't understand these types. I would like to be near the top of my class as would everyone but I want to be there because I worked hard and earned it not because I brought others down from their potential. Competitiveness brings out the worst in some people and they're not gunners they're just douches. On the other hand I know some students who want to specialize but want to go to the bar multiple times a week and think it's unfair that some people work harder than them at school. I hate those just as much. Everyone should abide by the rule that everyone is in it together during dental school and the more everyone works together, the more everyone benefits. That makes dental school so much more enjoyable and I'm lucky to be at a school where that is the case. The cards will fall where they may and in the end everyone is going to be a DMD with a good job making good money so why not make it as enjoyable as possible?

OP wants to hear stories, so stories I give.

And the purpose of my previous post was the total lack of self awareness, and not the fact of WHAT he is wearing but WHEN, like, as I said, during a lecture... Not very respectful/professional.

duh.

Lol. I know what you mean. Dental school is a marathon, not a sprint.

behind every gunner, there is a scared little child. They just wan to cover their fears by making others feel bad. I like the quiet, thoughtful students who work hard to actually learn the material and become competent clinicians; they're the ones who always contribute positively to class discussions, or group assignments.

The biggest gunner during my undergrad years was this girl whose parents left her as a baby. She was then adopted, but after finding out about the adoption, she wasn't the same.

She was probably the most competitive person I've ever seen, but in the middle of the night call me, to confirm to her she is "great".

Some people have the intrinsic drive to prove themselves, as it might be all they have going for them. They will do everything they can to get to the top, and don't care how many heads they have to step on to get there.
