Wow I hate gt with a passion since migration. It just DECIDED to add gynecological questions to my daily review for no reason. Wtf. And the daily review questions don't work like before, at least for me. I can't do them in bulk anymore. It's making me click one topic at a time (ie do the 3 gyne questions, wait 10 minutes for it to exit, then start the three immuno questions). And the arrows don't work anymore. I actually have to click "show answer" now

Anyone else feel...betrayed? Lol I'm actually pretty bitter. FC is pretty terrible so far. I had this well-thought out plan that had been working for 2+ months and all of a sudden it's been flipped upside down. I gotta make a big decision in the coming few days about if I want to stick to gt or fc or give up both...
But gotta make that decision soon b/c if I choose to do gt, gotta know ASAP because I don't want thousands of daily questions to add up...

•sigh•

Is that an option? I assumed that once you made the switch, you were done with GT. Can you still go back and use it for the long-term?

I'm still "migrating," by the way, about 27 hours after starting. I probably could've typed out all the cards I had banked, the questions, and all the answers by now.

I think I'd be willing to wash my hands of Firecracker now and go back to GT if I could, but I don't want to risk messing everything up.

As far as i can tell, GT is still around. I'm gonna stick to it since it's been tried and tested and I know it works. I still have faith that FC can get its kinks figured out. Then maybe I'll switch over to FC and do subject by subject review...

I don't even know...I'm just trying to figure out my approach again. I thought I had it down but gotta re-adjust now...

Anki maybe?

Ive migrated to fc but since it sucks ***** I'm back to gt. my daily questions probably won't be transferred over, which sucks. But I won't sit here and start forgetting things because fc hasn't gotten it's act together. Like wow. Im so shocked at these people. They should have learned from their mistakes. Didn't a similar thing happen last year? Like how hard is it to get something like this to work? And if they couldn't handle it, couldn't they just automatically generate an email to 200 people every two days saying they should migrate? That would have been better than crashing the system because they let everyone migrate too soon. Lame...not impressed.

Yeah I can't even log on to firecracker without getting the server hiccup message.

Back to GT as well.

Best to not be the first through the breach.

"A forlorn hope is a band of soldiers or other combatants chosen to take the leading part in a military operation, such as an assault on a defended position, where the risk of casualties is high. The term comes from the Dutch verloren hoop, literally "lost heap", and adapted as "lost troop"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forlorn_hope

While it is pretty shocking that they thought it was time to go live with such a buggy program, it doesn't seem like it would be too hard to fix this. This might be a huge mistake, but I'm considering sticking with FC...Does anyone know what the point of the "study questions" is?

Edit: OK never mind. Just started getting nonstop "server hiccups".

Like, yeah. Like, I know. Like, this is crazy. Like.

I say we hit up their FB page for answers. They always reply to posts there (because everyone sees it), but they don't seem to reply to SDN anymore.

Got nothing better to do there, bud?

Also, I think FC might get their act together soon. They can't afford to NOT fix this.

Yeah but if they don't fix within a day or don't allow a remigrate option then I'm going to be pretty annoyed. Those who held off on migration were wise.

lol I knew this was coming, so I held off, too. Besides, the point is that no one knew if FC was going to be better even if it DID work, AND it's pretty common for these type of migration processes to be clogged with traffic and then be riddled with errors even if you did make it through. Happens all the time.

(X-Men: The Last Stand -
Magneto: "Let the pawns go first.") </nerd>

No offense, though hehe. My best advice is just carry on with GT if you can go back for now... they seem like a nice bunch of cats so you might get a free month out of it or something later on.

I dont want a free month. I want money back lol
You finally know how all those cute little guinea pigs that you experimented on this summer felt, lol 😀

I will say I'm interested to see some of the new content. I saw they had stuff like MMSE under some of the clerkship topics and some things I'm seeing on rotations. I'll be excited to start learning new things again.

Anyone know how the flag system works?

Lol cute pigs? I was lysing breast cancer cells for fun.

According to their FB page:

We've had a tremendously positive response to migrating GT accounts and during peak hours it can take quite a bit longer than 30 minutes. Migration time will vary depending on the size of your account and the number of other people migrating at the same time. But you'll definitely get an email from us when your migration is complete.

Due to the number of people migrating simultaneously, our servers are taking a beating and consequently are loading Firecracker and GT pages, data and functionality much slower than it would normally. Please bear with us for a few days until the migration frenzy subsides. Thanks! Let us know if there's anything else we can do to help!

Thanks for your patience and apologies for the inconvenience caused!

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

This was the email I got from one of their people yesterday. I politely asked the dude why he was so excited given the fact that I was so pissed at the whole migration process.

Who are the people giving these positive feedbacks anyway? Lol

I think they mean "positive response" in that a lot of people are trying to do the migration process. They can't possibly mean 'positive feedback'. It's just worded like your standard corporate PR bs where they try to spin anything negative

Oh okay lol. That makes sense. I wanted to slap the dude in the face when I got that email.

Anyone know how to search on firecraker? Also, there doesn't seem to be a custom review button.

GT, Why u do this?

In case you guys haven't heard, you can keep doing reviews and banking in GT even if your migration has stalled. Once all the migrations are done, there'll be an option to re-migrate all the stuff you've done in the interim. Lastly, they're planning on finding a fair compensation for all of the problems caused during the migration.

Sigh, I got too excited by all the step 2 content and went for the migration option. I'm 9 hrs in and no luck yet. Fortunately I only have like 40 questions a day. I think this will be good when they get all the bugs hammered out.

👍 woot!

hey guys i need help i want to review the flash card with the question they told me that the question are part of schedule review quizz :S? where can i found themmm

So guys migratin issues aside, whats the word on FC...worth it or not? I mean basically has the issue with limiting the number of questions to like 120 and doing like subtopics settled?

Thanks.

limiting the number of questions to like 120

Thanks.

I think they scrapped that idea in favor of implementing a better "high yield" version. Good choice in my opinion. The whole notion of limiting the daily cards was poorly conceived - it wouldn't really do anything different than just letting some of your scheduled cards roll over to the next day... again and again and again... If you want that option, just be lazy and don't do all your cards. It might feel worse seeing them add up, but it's the same deal. Much better to just have LESS cards that touch on the more important topics. I think that was a recent decision though, so not sure when/how it will be implemented.

When you get the chance to look at FC, I'd love to know how 100% banked in step 1 material translates into %banked for step 2, as well as your input on the step 2 content quality.

I'm getting tired of doing these cards every day, but if step 1 material comprises a fair portion of the step 2 content and the step 2 content is decent, I'll probably just continue on with it (though I guess I'll see how I feel after step). Implementing break days in FC was definitely a very good idea - one skipped day here and there won't screw with spaced repetition at all and would be wonderful to have as an option

Also, for anyone curious, I'm pretty sure ranking '4' works out to about 2/3 the mastery of a '5'

Smh. Happens to me all the time. I recently figured out that if u click end review session, u wont have to redo the questions.

it happened to me too, and then after i clicked end review questions, it still made me redo a few of them (like 10%). Afterwards, accounting for the questions I had already done, my schedule for the day lost like 30 questions and I dunno where they went 🙄😕

have the migration kinks been sorted yet? safe to migrate now or hold off?

Stay with GT for now. Even if you migrate successfully, people have reported problems with FC so it's best to just pretend that FC hasn't even been released yet (because it shouldn't have).

I will if my migration ever completes. It's been over 30 hrs 😡

Holy crap the questions on GT are getting annoying. Who is in charge of product development over there, George Lucas? You're ruining a good thing! No one is going to use GT as a replacement q bank!

Just give me the part in bold. I wish we could rescue them from themselves somehow.

Hi Stephen, Thanks for your feedback. Actually we mix in some questions with somewhat unusual question stems because on the real USMLE exam you will see very long questions that often times will be UNRELATED to the eventual question itself. For example, they may give you excess background information, vital signs, physical exam findings etc but only ask you a very simple question about a bacterial toxin. So our intention is to help you filter through the less important material quickly. Sean

Just in case you aren't one of the GT users trolling - that's great, but it doesn't have any place in a spaced repetition program

No, not a trolling GT user. I'm the editor-in-chief of the USMLE division. We are working really hard to make our review questions better and we always appreciate your feedback. We want to help you study more efficiently, so I will definitely address this issue with our team. Thanks!

Bchandler once again where u at homey i know u readin dis

Hi Guys! Thanks for checking out Firecracker and we're really sorry for the inconvenience caused.

Here's how you can migrate your GT account to FC if you like the core features that FC currently has (we stripped it down to what 99% of you guys actually used on a regular basis but we will be adding content and features and more control over how, what, when you study going forward!): http://blog.firecracker.me/migrate-y...-in-one-click/

But before you migrate do check out FC by signing up at med.firecracker.me to make sure it has all the features you use. Otherwise just wait a bit and let us get FC there. For instance, FC currently doesn't have the ability to do all questions for a particular subject area in advance of when they are scheduled. But features like that are coming soon!

As you guys know, given the number of migrations of some of our most active users, our servers are taking a beating and it's slowing down not only migration but also FC's performance. But if you like FC and can wait a day or two (it's hard to predict, some migrations finish in 30 mins), go ahead and migrate. And, in the worse case that you need to study but the migration isn't finished, jump back on GT while we do a little surgery on our server stack over the next few days. We'll offer a way to sync up any work you do over on GT with FC once we get our kitten purring again and showing everyone love.

We'll also be building a server status page to constantly track server health for all of you 24 hours a day. So you'll never again be asking yourself "is it me or them?" Right now it's us. But we're on it, we love you, and we're drinking a lot of coffee until the awesome has returned.

Thanks for the continued support guys! And, as always, drop me a line here with any questions whatsoever. Or drop us a line at Twitter (@firecrackerinc), Facebook (www.facebook.com/firecrackerinc), via the "holla" feedback tab on GT or Firecracker, or via email to [email protected]

I also just read a lot of the great ideas for improvement and agree with much of what is being said. We're on it.

I also just read a lot of the great ideas for improvement and agree with much of what is being said. We're on it.

Two more ideas for improvement:

1. Give us the option to not have any Qbank-style, multiple-choice questions in the daily review or banking/flagging quiz. As others have said, they slow things down and there's little value in seeing them more than once.

Qbank-style questions aren't useless, but I'd rather save them for exam simulations and there are better ways to integrate them with the spaced repetition. For example, the site could put together a simulated exam based on topics that we've reached a reasonable mastery level in (because basic recall comes before integrative reasoning.) Then performance on the Qbank questions could be fed back into the daily review schedule for related cards.

2. Give users more control over when questions appear. Adaptive repetition is great, but the algorithm doesn't know whether I'm taking Step 1 next week or in two years. I often get questions in GT where even pressing "5" means the question will show up again in just a few days, and the only way to delay that is the "customize" slider (awkward in GT, missing altogether in FC.) How about user-definable shortcut keys that override the algorithm so that (for example), I could set "6" to mean 90 days or "0" to mean today?

Anyone know how the flag system works?

Hi @Alvarez - "flagging" a topic means that you want our system to schedule questions for you. If you haven't done any questions on the topic before, we will give you "Study" questions on the related concepts. On the basis of how you rate your recall on the questions, FC will then place "Review" questions into your study plan on days that we think you should review that particular concept (all of our questions are tied to the concepts you see presented within topics).

If you unflag something, all the related questions will be taken out of your study plan.

If you "reflag" something (i.e. flag something you unflagged), then you will pick up where you left off. For example, let's say you unflagged something and then reflagged it. If a question on a related concept was schedule but you missed it because the topic wasn't flagged, that question will show up under "Revisit" when you reflag the topic. But if the question was scheduled for a day in the future, it will simply reappear in your schedule. In the event that we add a new concept to the topic you're reflagging, you will get a question on that concept in "Study" to make sure that you review that new concept.

That's the long answer! 🙂 Let me know if you have any other questions whatsoever. Thanks!
