Gunner Training?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey anyone know how to reduce the nbr of question per day it 700:S:S plz i need help

Don't spend more than 30-60 sec on any particular question. Keep a good pace and use a stop watch to try to move yourself along. If you can't get the answer in a few seconds, it needs to be a 1-2 and you'll see it again in a few days.

I agree 👍

I'm also an MS2 and have banked around 40% and see on average >300 question a day. I spend about 5-10 looking at a card and if I cannot recall the info, I read the answer and move on.

Also, I found reviewing sections in FA before GT helps.

This is important to do. Whenever I banked a new card, I always read through the FA section that was associated with it just to see if there was extra info. On the rare occasion FA had something, usually pictures or diagrams, I would make a note of it for later.

Edit: clarification to this issue is below -

For anyone who has tried Firecracker,

What I'm not understanding is the 'spaced repetition' schedule - it is so different from Gunner. For instance, on GT when you add a new card and rank the questions with a 1, you will see it the following day, and see it every single day after that until you reach mastery.

On Firecracker - first, after ranking a new card with all 1's, I didn't see any of the questions until 3 days later! And then, when I did the questions on the assigned date, and again ranked them all 1's (because lone and behold, it was like the first time I was looking at them) - they are again on my review schedule 2 days later! I don't like this pattern. When I rank something a 1, I want to see it until I remember it .. I feel like Firecracker is spacing it out *too* much. Not to mention, in GT, you have the option to go ahead and do all the questions for a day ahead of time, or all the questions for a specific category even if it is not scheduled on that specific day - this does not exist on Firecracker! You are completely locked out of doing anything but the questions on your calendar for the day (plus new cards, obviously).

Is this how it is going to be and is there some theory behind it? Or is it still super-beta?

I'm not saying that GT is perfect in terms of spaced repetition scheduling, but I think FC is **TOO** liberal ....

Lastly, keep track of your progress. I have a google doc where I keep track of how many cards I've done compared to the total cards in the bank, as well as whether or not I've met my daily goal to keep on track. It's as simple as subtracting your target end date by a cell that has today's date (to calculate the number of remaining days). Then you divide the number of days left with the number of cards left unbanked. This number should remain below your specific target number per day (for you, roughly 5.5). This number will slowly creep up as the days go by where you don't bank at least 6 new cards, and it will slowly drop as you get ahead. Good luck.

Thank you for this advice. Just made a nifty spreadsheet that adjusts itself based on the number of cards done per day, and it's super motivating. 👍

Ok, that's fair, thank you Ventulus.

I thought you guys maybe reworked the algorithm or something.

Reworked is an understatement: i've modeled multivariate algorithms that take into account : your own prior performance, year in school, hair color, school, number of times card reviewed, total time spent on website for a given topic, metadata from all other Firecracker users, goal test date, etc.

The smarter the formula gets, the closer we can get EACH user to their own individualized "sweet spot" - the optimal time between studying something too soon or too late.

Beta is pretty straight forward though 🙂

Why hair color?
And in terms of total time spent on the website for a given topic, does that mean that when I have the page open it's modifying what my schedule will look like for that topic? Sometimes I get up from my computer for a few minutes with the page still up; that won't skew the calculations of the algorithm will it?

I was trying to decide between using shoe size, hair color, and number of anti-GT/FC posts on SDN and ended up picking hair color. just a joke guys,

Should be fine to leave your page open as long as you like with unlimited bathroom breaks. Not hard to correct for outliers and wash it out with metadata.

Ok well it's good to know you were joking about hair color.

As for the time away from the computer, I wonder how that will affect those of us with mild to crazy ADD. If I just zone out for 10 seconds on an easy question I hope that won't make it come sooner---will it?

I think a lot of the original post was sarcasm, and that you shouldn't worry about it.

A lot of what he mentioned is actually worked into the algorithm; hair color and school probably aren't in it but I'm just wondering which ones he mentioned actually are, and if they should really be incorporated.

I've been thinking about all except hair color. Still just in the planning stages with a few lines of script. Gotta work on getting the basic functionality of FC up to snuff first.

Interesting ideas though - I haven't heard of incorporating anything other than the self-ratings into an algorithm

Please please please do NOT get rid of Gunner Training! Even after you've fixed all the issues with Firecracker, I do not want to be migrated... I paid for a year of *GT*, not Firecracker!

Please make better hotkeys. Look at Anki program, they have a nice layout that is user friendly and more ergonomic than the one on GT. Space for answer, then 1, 2, 3, or 4 for next question. Quick and easy, unlike GT right now where pressing keys all across the keyboard slows down workflow. Or at least give us the option of being able to select from a set of premade hotkey setups, so people can use what they like.

On that note, does anyone have a link to the hotkey program that was mentioned a page earlier?

Alright GT faithful, first semester of M2 is is over in a month and for me that means I will crack into UWorld for the first time over winter break. There is no overstating UWorld's necessity for Step1. Is anyone concerned with how GT will get in the way of using UWorld (trying to get through it at least twice) and not tanking with classes?

I for one am very concerned...

Oh and I am like 35% banked 23% mastered for reference

I have been asking for this for literally over a year now. Is it so hard to let us use the numpad?

Please tell me you didn't remove the comments section from GT and my browsers are broken? Tried chrome, firefox and IE and the comments sections in GT is not showing up. Will try another computer at home....

edit: It was the school computer. User comments working 100% at home.

Thank you for the great news!

Just a quick question: I currently have gunner training and I understand Firecracker has Step 2 material as well. Will I be able to view that material? Also, what will happen to all the cards I have banked already? Will I have to start again?

Thank you again,
JG

PS Was there any progress made on the Ipad, Ipad Mini or Iphone app for Firecracker?

thanks again!

So on firecracker I have a message saying that the site will be down on Monday. Does anyone know if that means just firecracker and not GT? That past few site down incidences were my first and they were a big pain to try to study around.

This is from Firecracker's FB page directed at one of the user's questions.

"Hi _______, this downtime will not affect GT's servers. Thanks for asking! Should have mentioned that in the post and email."

👍

Getting excited about the new Firecracker version to get pushed on Monday (site will be down for the day):

- No more problems with very large quizzes (some users reported experiencing errors whenever their quizzes got really large)
- Graphical and numerical insight into your performance, not only on all flagged topics, but also on your current day's recommended quiz.
- Revamped quiz summary that lets you quickly retake any questions you want to, and that tells you if you're score improved, stayed the same, or went down for questions you've seen before.

It's a great start (particularly with the quiz size issue), with more must-have stuff to come. Hopefully we can all move over to a "Firecrackers" thread soon!

When do you foresee us being able to migrate again? I missed out on the first wave a few weeks/months ago and I'm getting antsy.

I have been doing GT for about a month, and I was wondering how people go about studying the 20+ question pure memorization cards (e.g., Autoantibodies and Associated Disorders). So far, I have been reading the card and then using the quizzes to actually learn the information on the card. Have others been using a similar method or is there a better way of learning this material?

Was doing my 11/25 daily review from 11:30pm-1am (11/26) CST and I finished as per usual. However, when I was directed back to my dashboard my daily review for Monday, today, was 0. Did this happen to anyone else? Yesterday (11/25) it was like 150 or something. Heck I'm not complaining but it is interesting that this falls on the same day as Firecracker's overhaul...

Sorry for all the dates and paratheses. It's flippin' late and I am trying to get this straight in my head.

Try refreshing? Are you on GT or Firecracker? If the latter, I assume maybe they just redistributed the load knowing you couldn't actually do them today.

what worked best for me was just hitting it every day. Just read through the card briefly every day. After about 1-2 weeks you will be surprised what you will remember.

Lysosomal storage diseases were a bitch.

I would suggest not trying to learn it after one intense read through. Would never work for me although I suspect I am probably slow

Also, it depends entirely on how "high yield" I feel the information is. If I don't think it's all that important, maybe I'd be fine with ranking it a 4 getting just a third of the things. Usually, if there's a mnemonic, I'll go for getting all of them. Now that I'm restarting GT, one thing I'm trying to make myself do is, if I don't get it right, I'll rank it a one and come right back to it at the end of that quiz (I redo all the 1's). I keep repeating them until I can get it. If I can't spit the info out 20 minutes after looking at it, I'm sure not going to be able to spit it out a day or two later. Suck up the suckiness of re-reviewing all the cards you get wrong and it'll save you a headache in the long run.

All that said, I still can't make myself do it 100% (or even 75%) because it's a huge pain the ass. Just do my best

Will the user comments from the GT cards transfer over to firecracker?

many of the comments are invaluable. Killer mnemonics

Firecracker is looking better much more smooth and I like how you can manipulate quiz content. Although it seems cumbersome to do so and the time spent changing your quiz could be spent actually doing all the questions.

However, I am concerned about the posts above? Subaru and Twostep are you saying you have been banking cards in FC and now all of a sudden they are gone after the update?

FC Team:

Get the migrations up.
Add a search bar.
Allow custom schedule on the quizes.
Call it a day.

This is getting ridiculous. This update you've been "working" on is pathetic.

I really like the new addition to Firecracker in that you are able to redo questions from your daily quiz in a selected manner! Great thinking.

I do still hope that "on demand quizzes" (i.e, ability to do quiz questions from any card at anytime, irregardless of where they are along in your accumulated review schedule) is something that happens soon and that this is not a replacement for that - they are entirely different concepts.

Note: for those worried - you're review schedule is not erased, for some reason the cards are just not flagged anymore - so all you have to do is flag them, and then they will reappear where they should have been on your schedule.

👍 definitely progress, but still not what we have all universally identified as what we believe to be the most important things, ironically. 🙁 here is to hoping that all of that comes through, SOON.

My firecracker cards banked and questions are showing Zero after the upgrade. Anyone else get reset back to zero?

Yup same here, i'm really pissed right now. I've used GT since Aug 2011, took Step 1 in June '12, loved the program!

I extended my subscription for a year for FC's clinical content, then when the 1st set of GT-->FC migrations started several months ago, I unfortunately tried to migrate and my account got frozen and it's been frozen since despite several emails to Nick! I ended up having to create a free FC account so I can do just the clinical content and select step 1 content and that went fine for a few months, I sent an email to Nick telling him since my original FC account is still frozen from the botched migration, I'll just stick with the new FC account that i've been using and that my membership should be transferred to the new FC account...

To my horror, I check FC today and everything had been wiped out from my new account, meanwhile I have an internal medicine exam next week!! This is str8 up F'ed up, period!!! I've already lost a couple of days from this last "update" only God knows how much longer it's going to take to get my account restored? It's been amateur hour at GT/FC for too long now, ppl are paying for a service that's not functional at this point! I'm not one to b@#$% on this forum but this **** is getting outta hand!!😡😡

hey really it is nice to view new changes in firecraker but we need other settings like on demand question for anny cards and controlling the review shedulde 🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁

Yeah, very similar story here. Just reflagged everything and it comes back....unfortunately I have 3 days of questions to now do 🙁.... First world problem I suppose, but annoying.

Maybe I didnt get the email/memo, but how exactly does this migration work? As it stands I am still using Gunnertraining and I have yet to be "migrated" to Firecracker. Is there something I need to do to facilitate this transition?

thanks

Hey guys,

Can anyone who is far along / all the way done banking give us a list of the number of questions by subject? I'm trying to plan out when I want to try to finish certain subjects, but since each card is a different length w/ different numbers of questions, that can be difficult. I think a question number/subject would be really helpful. Thanks!

PS - A screenshot upload of the "Questions by subject" pull-down would be awesome and easy so you don't have to type them all up.

I'm at about 80% banked, so I'll put an asterisk next to the approximated fields. (Basically the number of current questions divided by the percent banked for that field in terms of cards).

Pharmacology 200
Pathology 224
Embryology 334
Behavioral Science 174
Endocrinology 369
Immunology 417
Hematology 370
Cardiology 498
Biochemistry 646
Anatomy 758
Microbiology 1,059
Orthopedics 473
Nephrology 408
Dermatology 179
Psychiatry 386
*Neurology 572
*Reproductive 488
*Pulmonology 432
*Gastroenterology 808

Total projected: 8,846

n.b. For some of my completed subjects (Micro in particular) the question count moves around a bit. Some days its 1055, others it's 1054. It's obviously small potatoes, but it's something to note.

EDIT: I'll keep editing and updating these numbers as I complete subjects so hopefully they'll reflect total subject counts in a few weeks as I bank everything.
