It bothers me that people on this forum spend so much time putting down gunners. Do you no understand that 9/10 times they are just really insecure individuals desperate for affirmation. This type of attitude will likely not carry them far in life, and this is a lesson that they will have to learn. However, there is no need to put them down, for it is not your job to teach them this. It is not their fault they are this way, most likely their parents. Please, I implore everyone to focus on their own studies and just let it go. I find what many of you are doing to be more pretentious as the gunners themselves. Thanks for the consideration.....🙂

I agree with most of what you said, that people should worry about their own behinds, but i disagree about parenting, because at the college level people should know to think for themselves.

Kind of counterintuitive if you're going to be antisocial and mean to others as a way of seeking affirmation.

Simply trying to get high grades or asking questions is not being a gunner.

I think it's important to note that there's a difference between going the extra mile (dedicated student) and sabotage (gunner). While a "gunner" may also go the extra mile on things, it's the element of sabotage that makes them a gunner.

Example - meeting with the professor often is going the extra mile. Scheduling yourself for every office hour whether you have a legit question or not so that other students can't get help - that's sabotage.

Besides, the word "gunner" is a slang term that doesn't really mean anything concrete. Some people may use it to refer to any student who works hard, others may used it only to refer to the true saboteurs. I personally only use it for the saboteurs, because I feel that every strategy that doesn't break the rules or block other students from performing well is fair game.

I agree with you. My definition might not be that of others. However, based upon the definition that you have presented, someone who directly tries to sabotage other, I do not think that many such gunners exist. There is no feasible way to really sabotage someones grade. If a student was being a jerk and taking all the office hours, I am sure the professor would put a stop to it.....anyways, I believe this thread has gone on to long.

I agree with you. My definition might not be that of others. However, based upon the definition that you have presented, someone who directly tries to sabotage other, I do not think that many such gunners exist. There is no feasible way to really sabotage someones grade. You'd be surprised, though, at the many devious ways people attempt sabotage. I saw plenty of people trying to pass bad answers to their study partners for microbio, for example. People who waste class time grandstanding are also committing sabotage, in a way, as they're breaking the flow of lecture and distracting people. Sabotage can be subtle, it needn't be something insane or obvious like marking the "key" bubble on a scantron with similar answers to yours and then turning it in with the rest of the class' exams.
