Personally, I don't like to button my suit. Does anyone have a problem with this?

Also, when you go in for your interview, are you expected to take off your jacket or just leave it on?

Peace

I like to button my suit - I just think it looks cleaner - to each his own! When I sit for interviews, I unbutton the last button (I have three buttons) and leave the other two buttoned. I don't take off my coat unless it's 1) offered and 2) I feel hot. 😛

But that's just me - I think there's a forum out there about this...

i usually button the suit when i'm up and about and unbutton it when i sit.

so far, i took my jacket off (was hot and the interviewer offered that i could take it off) at one interview to the school i am now waitlisted at....kept the jacket on for another interview for the school i am accepted at...i think i'll keep it on at the next interview 😉

hahaha

I button, but am not offended by a lack of it. And I normally leave my jacket on.

hey buddy, you are getting way too neurotic, and you once called me that..??!! 🙄

seriously just do what you are comfortable with as far as the buttons, there isn't a right and wrong way and it's not going to determine the end result. i would not take off my jacket unless your interviewer offers or unless you are ready to pass out.

i normally leave my jacket on, and unbutton when sitting down, but otherwise keep it buttoned. i think it is probably generally a good idea to keep your jacket on while interviewing.

i was always told to button both buttons on a 2-button suit, and leave the bottom one unbuttoned on a 3-button suit. i was also taught that a true gentleman never takes off his coat (dont know if this applies to interview etiquette). of course this all came from the mouth of my senile grandfather...

Well, I think that the traditional thing to do is to button only the top button when you are not sitting, and unbutton the button when sitting down (thus making the jacket unbuttoned). This is what I always learned. That being said, I don't think it is really wrong to never button the suit, and taking off your jacket should be done only in more informal situations (I probably wouldn't take it off during an interview). However, none of this really will have any bearing on your acceptance JDAD, so don't worry 🙂 Good Luck!

You are correct. I need off this board.

Thanks for everyone for their input, I am still going "unbuttoned" though 😎

good luck, JDAD, relax, you'll do just great and you will get your acceptance letter shortly. 😀

As far as I know:

Sitting - always unbutton

Standing 3 button - button the middle button if only using one, then the top if using two. never ever button the bottom button

Standing 2 button - button only the top button

I agree. You paid just short of an ass-load for that jacket and, dammit, that thing is staying on throughout the interview regardless!

i unbutton, becuase i think it looks silly when i do button.

my suit is ghetto though. if i had a better fitting suit, i would probably button up.

Yes, exactly right....what I was trying to say in a much more organized way🙂

buisness etiquette is on a three button suit: All three are buttoned except when sitting. The bottom button is undone when seated. My school always taught that you never take your suit coat off, you are trying to appear to be professional which is the point of the suit in the first place. Plus if its hot in the interview you have to watch out that your shirt doesn't sweat through.

NO NO NO--NEVER button a suit when you are seated (unless you are a girl). Also, you can button as many button's as you'd like starting at the top, but the bottom button is never to be buttoned.

Almost exactly right. On a three button, you can do top, middle, top and middle (just never the bottom button)

holy CRAP!!! Is this like the hanky code?? 😀 😀 😀

http://home.earthlink.net/~rodwood/hankiecode.html

I just think it's distracting when people mess with them... and none have mentioned the doubled breasted rules?? Or are those out of style?

almost, exactly, exactly right.

obviously it doesn't matter; we can't agree and i'm sure the interviewers have no clue either. Just be neat and it's always better to overdress than underdress; don't take off your jacket unless invited to.

what to do on such questions of proper suit wearing technique? yes, that is right, refer to QUEER EYE FOR THE STRAIGHT GUY:

three button suit, the bottons go ALWAYS, SOMETIMES, NEVER:

top button is always buttoned, middle sometimes, bottom never. at least for standing, its ok to be unbottoned while sitting
