I come unto ye all masters of SDN Pre-Dental for I am in desperate need of thine advice...

Okay.

I'm an American 2nd time reapplicant:
3.0-->3.1 Overall GPA;
2.56-->3.0 sGPA via a 3.8 in SMP

I have literally thousands of shadowing/work/volunteer hours, an awesome personal statement and strong LORs from my dentist mentor, SMP profs and even undergrad prof I was tight with.

My first DAT scores were taken after studying for like 2-3 weeks and I got 19PAT/16 TS/ 17 AA.

My question is this... I am retaking the DAT on July 9th and dont feel comfortable at all.

I've already applied to 21 schools,the only thing missing is a new and better DAT score.

Whould it be sabotage to take the DAT say, July 31 and make use of the extra study time or should I take it on July 9th and try to at least get a 19AA?

I know its not ideal, but I want to make the most of the DAT w/out putting my whole application in jeopardy.

Advice please guys?

It really depends on several factors. How long have you been studying this second time around? I ask because at least for me after a certain period (2 months) I begin to forget the material. You will never feel ready as you may already know. I can only speak from personal experience. I took the DAT on Aug 2 and still had 5 interview invitations. It really is better to take the extra time (if you sincerely feel that you need it ) rather than getting similar scores because its really important that you show an improvement this second time around.

july 9th is still a couple weeks away. hit the books! I don't think waiting till july 31st is sabotage though.

another thing to chew on is that you will never really feel prepared. At least i didn't. Its kind of just a gut feeling that you get to that says "just take the damn thing already" even though you think you could still do more.

What are you scoring on the practice tests? What materials are you using to study? Other people that took their DAT "late" said that they emailed their scores to the schools they applied to so they would have them sooner and that seemed to help. That would be an option. I would take a practice test this weekend, see where your scores are with that and decide from there if you need to reschedule.

Ive been doing DAT Bootcamp tests and ranging around 17-19. And yes, if I reschedule my test date, I'll definitely scan and email schools my unofficial scores.

A couple of the schools I've applied to are okay with doing that. And thanks for the advice, I'll take another practice test to see how I'm doing.

Oh yeah I figure I'll always feel like more study time would be helpful, but to be honest with you, I feel underprepared.

Maybe its worry from last time, I'm certainly studying harder for it this go around. I just want it to be reflective of that fact.

And thanks for the insight, I'd hate to miss out on interviews because of a rescheduled exam date.

I made a study schedule based upon Ari's 10 week schedule and the Exam Kracker's 8 week MCAT schedule.

My schedule however was only 4 weeks long because I didnt want to drag on the study period and risk forgetting anything or risk getting lazy.

So far I'm 2 weeks into the 4 week schedule and while I do feel confident and am learning things better, I have an itch in the back of my mind thats considering how much better I think I'd do if I studied for 7 weeks total instead of 4 weeks total.

And yes I really do want to show all around improvement in my application, I just dont want to risk writing a late DAT considering my sub-par undergrad GPA and re-applicant status.

I would take it July 9th. I dont want time to then be your issue. You just need to be more confident

Have you done the Destroyers? How comfortable do you feel with it?

Your GPA is low, your SMP helps, but the DAT score is still low. You said you don't feel ready and you're averaging 17-19 on Bootcamp. It's hard to say how you'll feel about the test in 2 weeks, maybe you'll make a lot of progress and be ready, but as it's looking right now...reschedule. You need to do well on the DAT.

As well as anyone else I suppose, I just chugh through the questions and the ones I get wrong I look up and re-do.

In that case, I say buck up, push a couple of more reviews through, and take the DAT.
