I was wondering for those of you who applied to GW and have interviews, if you wrote an extra essay? I wasn't aware of the essay until too late since I did not see that small disclosure at the bottom of their website. However, they offered me an interview about 5 days before the interview day. I am wondering what I should do? Write one and give it to them there? I am seriously interested in their program but just did not know about an extra essay.

Hmm...interesting position to be in. I'd be willing to bet that the essay is really just something of a screen for interviews, making sure that those they offer interviews to those who are really interested in their program. It's a decent but not great system, as someone like you who really was very interested didn't see that "requirement".

No matter. You got the interview without handing in the supplemental! Impressive. If you wanted you could whip up something to hand in on interview day if you wanted, demonstrating your specific interest in the program. You could say something like "I didn't realize until after the application deadline that you wanted this essay, but I'm very interested in this program and here's why..." I'd bet though its a moot point since they obviously seem very interested in you.

thanks ophthoapplicant....i just wasnt sure what to do. im prob filling some spot but that it was very strange to still get an invite (although im totally excited for it). ill prob just write an essay.

do you think it best to email it to them before my interview so that they have it durin gthe interview or just hand it in??

Hmm...I can't see it hurting to send it in early, maybe as a word doc in an email attachment (to the administrative coordinator) if the interview is soon.

If it were me, though, I'd skip the email and I'd just have one handy and hand it in on interview day. I'd probably, the morning of interview day, upon meeting the administrative coordinator let him/her know that I had written an essay about why I liked GW, and was wondering if it was something which they'd still be interested in having. At that point, they'll either say "not necessary" or "sure!", and if the answer is sure, they'd then slip the letter in the appropriate folder/s for the interviewer/committee.

Either way is probably fine though.

i dont remember an essay last year but i will mention that last year there were 3 five minute interviews total if i recall correctly. so i am not sure when you would mention the essay. not sure if that helps at all. good luck

even if no one actually reads it, taking the time to write one demonstrates a certain level of interest.
