Annual cheap DO vs expensive MD debate.

TCOM: $20k/ year Low COL Solid match and great education for DO. Love the area.

GW: $70k/ year Super high COL Excellent match, objectively better than TCOM. Also love the area, but don't love the COL.

Super blessed to have been accepted to GW. But cost is a big issue. This tuition difference is too big not to consider especially factoring the COL difference as well.

Likely will pursue a moderately competitive specialty such as rads or anesthesia. Doable at TCOM with hard work but would be way more achievable at GW.

Rads and anesthesia will both be much easier from an MD program. Unfortunately the DO bias is still alive and well in all specialties (although not at all programs within each specialty), and certainly in rads and anesthesia. Going the DO route will limit you to certain programs that are “DO friendly”. For example, if you like DFW, your only option for DR there is UTSW, and they don’t have a single DO grad in the entire DR program of fifty residents, despite their proximity to TCOM.

Edit: UTSW’s anesthesia program also doesn’t have any DOs in their program of nearly eighty residents.

Imo I would pick GW honestly because DO stigma still seems to be real especially when applying to competitive specialties. GW is also in a great part of DC!
