Hi! Trying to decide between GW and UHawaii JABSOM! I'm wondering how people like each school -- I want to be a pediatric emergency physician. What do people think/like about each school? THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!!!

Write out a list of pro's and cons, facts and subjective variables as well. Talk about culture between the two and what you like. This is much about where you will fit in culturally.

From my understanding, group learning in medical school is more beneficial compared to lecture, as it better simulates the actual process of taking care of a patient. However, the only Cons you have listed for GW is that it's not Hawaii. If your heart is set on Hawaii, and you feel you would thrive there, then I think you've made your decision.

This is such a great point - thank you. I think GW feels familiar and UH feels more scary because it's unknown?

I'm out of state, but seems like I can get IS tuition for years 2-4. Seems like rent may be a little higher, but about on par
Full disclosure I'm on WL at JABSOM but I'd calculate out the difference in COA and ask about that tbh - from talking to current OOS students at JABSOM it seems none of them were able to get IS tuition so the cost may be quite a lot. If not, sounds like you're leaning towards HI. Both should be good for your goals

That's a great idea to follow up on that. Thank you!!!!!

You should be certain you can get IS tuition if you choose Hawaii. I could never recommend choosing a school that charges $72k/year unless it was your only choice.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR REPLYING!!!! To be honest, I don't really have any cons for either -- I just want to be a doctor (which both will give me) and to serve people and to not regret my decision for some currntly unidentifiable reason.

UH JABSOM
Pros
- community based curriculum
- access to Pacific Disaster Center
- Eastern medicine integration
- living in HI
- grew up in Asia, so closer to that geographically and culturally

(Potential) Cons
- out of state resident -- will I be accepted?
- too much group work (PBL curriculum) and not enough lecture? I'm just more familiar with learning in lectures

GW
Pros
- love DC
- correctional medicine curriculum
- disaster medicine curriculum

(Potential) Cons
- did undergrad in DC, so that makes me more excited for a new experience (HI)
- regret not taking the leap to HI
In reference to the bolded, are you on the WL or you simply haven't applied yet? If it's the latter I suggest you read more threads on the pre-med forum and WAMC forum about school lists and make a broad school list when you do apply.

I believe what OP meant (and correct me if I'm wrong) is will they be accepted by the other students at JABSOM as it is very IS heavy. If that is the case, my answer to that is yes as long as you are a good person who respects the culture and the people there. I say this as a Native Hawaiian who grew up in Hawaiʻi. Locals and Native Hawaiians are super friendly and super welcoming, but if you come in with this attitude like you own the place, know everything about Hawaiʻi, or anything similar, then you will have a tough time making friends. I've been in a graduate program at UH and have made friends with a lot of people who are OOS, and they have enjoyed their time here (despite how expensive everything is).

Also I say all of this as someone who will be matriculating to JABSOM this year, so if you have any questions about living in HI, feel free to PM me! I also lived in the DC area for two years (WL at GW a couple of years ago), so if you have questions about DC in general, I can answer questions about that as well. Truly hoping the best for you though! Sounds like you got a lot going for you!
