GWU PsyD Interview Invites?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They REALLY emphasized how psychodynamic they are during the interview day, but does anyone know if there is any exposure to other types of interventions/treatments?

The post-doc fellow who runs their clinic seems to have a bit more breadth...check Dr. Mann's page on their website.

As for my impressions of the program, I still can't believe they didn't have coffee available during the refreshment period...:eyebrow:

The DCT of the program sent me an email tonight stating I was offered admission. The e-mail was sent at 11 pm tonight, so she is definitely working hard and into the night. I was not offered any financial assistance, but she said if someone ranked above me declines I might be able to get some grants.

Now it gets tough, because I have two other offers, and one of them offers full tuition remission and assistant ships.

Congrats to everyone who has been accepted! I got an email this morning and I'm on the waitlist, with a "very favorable" spot and "likely to be admitted." So if any of you are planning on turning down your offers, please let me know or PM me. I would love to know!

I am still without an e-mail from them. I assume it means bad news. At this point I just need the closure so I can move on and stop checking my phone. Patience is a virtue they say, which I am clearly lacking! As great as SDN has been, knowing exactly when everyone hears back has really taken a toll on my spirit as the clock ticks on for me. I wish I could make myself stop checking this site. BLAH.

Samesies. I'm waiting to receive an official offer from the school I was accepted at, so hopefully someone will get my spot.

I got my rejection email just a few minutes ago--sent from the secretary (with Dr. Holmes' signature). I guess those of us who were rejected don't get the courtesy of a reply from Dr. Holmes. I suppose that's to keep rejected candidates from replying to Dr. Holmes & asking her why they didn't get in. I don't much care, but it does feel like being cast aside....

That's definitely not a good feeling. If it's any consolation, the waiting list came from the secretary as well (with Dr. Holmes's signature). I think only people who were admitted directly heard from the DCT.

Enjoyed the company here but won't be going any further -- just got turned down by the coffeeless basement dwellers (stomps foot on sour grapes). Hope everyone who goes enjoys their time.

LOL! I too thought the location of the department was um... depressing...

But, I'm sorry you too were turned down. I'm not sure if it helps, but I'm telling myself that it's probably for the best. I think I'd feel like a salmon swimming upstream in that program. It's too bad because they were my #1 choice until the interview day.

Ah well... I guess it's good to know I'm not the only one. It sounds as though you'll get in, though.... Best of luck! :luck:

Hey- I was wondering what about the program brought up the feeling of swimming upstream? Just curious 🙂

I meant that I didn't think I'd fit in well with their approach (based on one of the professors with whom I interviewed who just rubbed me the wrong way). It's not that they are psychodynamically oriented-- the program I hope I get into has a prof. who I want to work with who is mainly psychodynamic in his approach. It's just that I felt like I'd have to keep my mouth shut a lot or else suffer the consequences. I'm a fairly warm/passionate person and it's really hard for me to pretend to be a blank slate. I definitely got the sense from my interviewer that this was the goal. That's just not who I am, nor do I think it's who I want to be. If I'd gone there, it would have been just to get a piece of paper and be done with it (it happens to be a shorter program, which was attractive). So.... maybe I should simply rejoice that I don't have to make a choice not to go there.

Is anyone else still without e-mail? Did anyone receive rejections?

It's weird but I had a mix up with them before my interview. a month or so after I got invited to interview I checked my status online and it said I had been rejected. I found this weird because I had a confirmation email for an interview. When I called they said the rejection status was a mistake, my file was sent to the wrong place and that I am still scheduled to come for the interview. Now it appears I am the only one still waiting to hear from them.

My file is cursed!

Hi,

I'll most likely be accepting my offer to GWU for next fall. Has anyone else actually accepted or rejected their offers yet?

In terms of the exposure to other orientations question, I have spoken to several students and graduates of the program, and feel that they have given me a pretty unbiased answer--in that you have as many opportunities to learn other frameworks as long as you take the initiative to do so. Many of the second and third year externships appear to be in placements that are not primarily operating psychodynamically. Hope this helps, and feel free to PM me to discuss the program!

Congrats Psyc325! I am so ready for this waiting/deliberating to be over myself, so I'm a bit envious... 🙂

Hi,

That's the impression I got, too. I'd also say that if you have a lot of initiative, you can probably make whatever you want out of any program you attend, which ultimately is what grad school is about. It requires maturity to do so, but it's also what is expected of you when you're out there in the "real world"....

PsychedCaryn,

Any word re: your status?

PsychedCaryn,

Any word re: your status?

Yes. I e-mailed Pam last night and apparently she had sent the e-mail to me in morning (10:35am) but it didn't go through (1st time that has ever happened to me, correct e-mail and everything). Anyway, i'm on the waitlist in the "mid" position were "5 or so students" are accepted from. Anyone else at this?

Any word, yet, PsychedCaryn? I received the same message and have been anxiously holding my breath this week. Tomorrow is April 1st, so I'm hoping those of us in the middle of the waitlist will hear soon! Best of wishes -

No, nothing yet from GW.

Hi all!
I was hoping to meet some of my classmates! Was wondering if there was been any movement on the waitlist?

I decided to set up a facebook group for our class- gwu psyd class of 2014. Join up if you'd like to.

Sending positive vibes your way!!!

Hey K!

I think you still have a great chance! April 1st was the deadline for those not receiving scholarship money.. There is still another two weeks for scholarship offers to make up their mind.. I still cant believe they did not offer you a position. What do you teach at GWU?
