Hello there,

I've been researching GWU's PsyD program. Seems to be one of the better programs out there. Does anyone here know much about it? What is its reputation in the field? What is their acceptance rate? Is it known to award decent financial aid? The website isnt terribly informative...

According to the APPIC website, their match rate for internship is 61.4%. Not what I'd call great, but not HORRIBLE compared to some other PsyD programs.

As for all the other info, I have no idea since my copy of the Insider's Guide is with someone else at the moment. Pick up a copy, it's worth it!

RD beat me to it, the one thing I remember about the program is the low match rate. It isn't an end all and be all, but it should be noted. If you are interested in the school, make sure to inquire about the match rate, and get some first hand info on it. Sometimes a school can have a down year (it happens), but check out APPIC's website for a 5-6 year review of match stats...it should be somewhere on the front page. OR you can do a search on here, it should come up within the first page of results. Be wary of a program that consistently places worse than the national average, year in and year out.

Thanks for your input. That number does seem very low. Though, when you go to their website (http://www.gwu.edu/~psyd/Internships2007.htm), they state that in 2006, 95% of their students got APPIC member internships, 79% APA accredited. These seem to be much higher numbers. How do you explain that?

The lower number I quoted was from APPIC's review of about six years (I think it's 2000-2006).

I'm applying to PsyDs too, but I think I've eliminated GW, unfortunately. 🙁 (Great school & location.) According to the Insider's Guide, 90% of the faculty subscribe to the psychodynamic orientation, and only 10% identify w/ CBT (other orientations: no faculty.) A student @ GW whom I contacted said that she liked the program, but that it was very psychodynamic, and to consider that seriously before applying. Of course, I think all clinicians should have solid training in psychodynamics, BUT I think it's limiting to make it such a heavy focus.
