you can try J1 visaI am dentist graduated from India. Now in US on visitor visa (B1/B2). I am looking forward to apply for Advanced education in general dentistry program (1 year, optional 2nd year) at Lutheran Medical Center, Tuscon Arizona. The concern person has asked me that student visa (F1) doesn't work for this program and I need to get work visa( H1) to get into this program. As a dental resident am supposed to get the stipend of $ 20,000/year for first year and $ 22,500/year. My question is am I eligible for work visa (H1) for this situation? H1B considering the stipend. I will really appreciate your help.
Thank you.
you can try J1 visa
Hello dentousa,
thanks for ur reply. What I got a mail from program director saying if I am an international dental graduate then I would have two options H1B / TN1(they didnt mention abt J1 Visa). Second one(TN1) is for canadian residents only. So U mean should I ask them for J1? what abt J1 limitations like you have to go back to your home country after completing ur education for 2 years as what I searched Dentist dont get J1 waiver in the US.Really messed up on this. Plz guide me if you can. I appreciate your help. thanks.
Hi Sanket:
J1 is exchange student/visitor visa and will not apply for the said program. H1B is not an option either since it needs you to have a job offer and your employer needs to sponsor you for the same. Not to discourage you, but I think you do not have a option here since the only option feasible would be if you are on your OPT which is granted only after you complete a Bachelor's, Master's or higher education from the US. Lutheran Medical Center clearly mentions in their instructions that they will not sponsor your visa. In other words, you need to be a US citizen or an international student on OPT to be eligible to be selected at the said AEGD program.
Hi drsm,
thanks for your reply. I really appreciate your help. I have exchanged quite few emails with the program director thr and he replied me saying that I need to get either H1B or TN1. My concern is about the stipend the dental resident is getting there, does it fulfill the wages requirement for the H1B visa? Thats why I have mentioned the stipend amount in my question. As they are have already informed me with the visa I have to apply. I wanted to make it sure that the WAGE req for H1B is satisfied by this or not. There are only 3 states where LMC accepts international dental graduates for AEGD including AZ not in others.
If you have any onformation reagarding H1B for dental residency program I would like to know.
thanks for ur help.

I am not sure if it satisfies the wage requirement. Consider, even if it satisfies the requirement, your employer should be ready to sponsor your H1B which most employers shy away from and that is exactly what Lutheran mentions in their instructions. I hope you get my point.
To file H1B, the wage is also depnds on place where u will be doing job. For example, wht u earn in rural place is not enough for New York city.
Hi,
When I called LMC they said they are not accepting foreign trained dentist from this year. ONLY GREEN CARD & PR. She said Information on web site is old and it need t be changed..
