Just got a call from the admissions office at Hackensack notifying me about a full tuition scholarship. Truthfully, until this point, I had completely ruled out Hackensack and was settled going to pitt. However, now I am wondering should I let about $260K+ in scholarship affect the decision I had made already.

More about me: I am from NJ but went to Pitt for undergrad. I have no idea what specialty I am interested in but definitely want to keep my options open for pursuing a competitive specialty or doing residency at a well-ranked institution in whatever I end up pursuing. I am definitely interested in research and academic medicine. I also will not be receiving money from Pitt.

I appreciate all your opinions!! thank you in advance!

Edit: Also wanted to add that HMSOM has not yet graduated a class for residency. This year they graduated their first class for the 3 year track they offer. Should I not consider this aspect, despite having an inkling for a competitive specialty

Think about which you may regret more. I am similarly turning down a full tuition for the opportunities a top 10 school is likely to offer given my interests. The determining factor for me was that I would always wonder how switching schools may have affected what I do in med school and after. Most people have loans but most everyone can pay them off after a few years. If you'll have regret about taking a chance on a new school with less established programs or it'll cause you stress in the long run, go with Pitt.

Agreed, but also pick a high paying speciality if you take out big loans

🙂

HMSOM. I cannot see how Pitt would justify hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans. You could regret not picking the more prestigious program in the future, but you could also look back and regret taking on huge debt. Depends on which side you want to fall on.
