Im in need of some help because I am super indecisive right now with this decision. I originally “planned to enroll” at Pitt but I just got off of the Einstein waitlist. I have about 4 days to decide where I want to go and I am so so torn. (For context if it helps, I’m interested in General surgery)

Einstein
Pros
  • Free tuition! From someone who isn’t really coming from money this sounds great and definitely reduces stress/anxiety. (Cannot ignore this huge plus)
  • Large underserved/immigrant patient population. I’ve volunteered with the ECHO clinic before and I loved working with those patients.
  • Proximity to manhattan. I’ve lived there before and I love it, hope to do residency in the nyc area.
  • Closer to family (located in Boston)

Cons
  • Location of school. Not sure what it’s like to live in that area. Unfortunately I’m unable to visit the school in person before making my decision.
  • Cost of living.
  • Not as well known as Pitt med

Pitt Med
Pros
  • A top place for research.
  • UPMC network is huge!
  • Went to accepted students day and I loved the vibe/community
  • Lower cost of living
  • New facilities
  • Well known school + amazing program
  • Possibilities seem endless lol

Cons
  • Essentially no financial aid (73k tuition a year)
  • Farther from family (located in Boston so a 9hr drive)
  • Not sure how likely it would be to match into residency programs in nyc if I’m living in Pittsburgh.

I’ve been up all night racking my brain to decide and I literally have no idea. Would love some insight!

IMO the Pitt name is not worth an extra $300k+ (even more after interest) over Einstein. Being closer to family and hoping to do residency in NYC makes Einsten my vote.

Have you tried talking to Pitt about matching financial aid if you are pretty dead set on going there?

Einstein is also a great research/well-known school, I wouldn't worry much about that. The cost difference is massive, and Einstein will give you a leg up for NY residencies. Pitt is fantastic as well, but I think this one is a pretty easy decision.

If you want to do residency in the NYC area, Einstein 1000%. Easier time and you'll have as much of an edge as people from Pitt in that area. The COL is not worth the free tuition and living in Pittsburgh imo
