Had an idea about a possible volunteer project I could start, what do you think?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

I help out my parents all the time with computer issues since they're both really unfamiliar with computer networking and Windows infrastructure. I was thinking I could start a project at my school where technologically inclined students could volunteer to help out the community by giving free computer troubleshooting to seniors who need it. People would call (either me or the student volunteers council at my school) and explain the issue, and they could be scheduled a time where a small group of students could go and help out (transportation could easily be provided by the my university's fleet of volunteer work cars). Probably everything would be scheduled for one or two afternoons a week.

Anyone have any opinions/input?

It sounds innovative. Go for it.

It sounds so noble, i think thats a great idea!

Don't most technologically inclined people do this stuff already? Ever since announcing my major to my family I have had to deal with "my computer stopped working...blahblahblah"

Besides, if you give a person a fish you feed him/her for a day. Teach a person to fish and you feed him/her for a lifetime:

Time to steal this idea. :meanie::meanie:

:laugh:You're halfway there.

We need more business people on SDN. Print a bunch of these, distribute them with phones and cheap laptops in a politically stable, but still dirt poor third world country. Pay third world workers in Ritz crackers, collect hefty fee from Americans who cannot Google.

Pure gold. I will take 10% commision for the bestowing of wisdom.

If i would be a computer person then i would defiantly join u in helping those ppl. Too bad i suck at the computer stuff i barely can find "add/remove program" or download something...

See above flow chart...

I think your idea sounds very cool. Some things you might want to consider...

In planning this, you might want to consider how you are going to market it (i.e., how are these senior citizens going to know to contact you if they have trouble). You might want to consider possible partnerships with local computer businesses and/or assisted living centers and/or your university's computer science department. Consider the resources your group will need (from volunteer to those you will help to money for printing and fliers, etc...) and what partnerships will best provide those resources to your group. Also, you might want to outline or map out what kind of "troubleshooting" services you are able to provide. This will help you figure out what resources you will need.

I hope this helps!

Definitely helpful, thank you!

Go Republicans!

I like it. Good luck.

What does Republicanism have to do with it?

Hahaha, I just looked at her profile and she was a leader in a couple Republican groups.

PS, I looked at the thread in Maxx4's sig and I laughed the hardest I've ever laughed on SDN.
