Hey all, new kid on the block:

Mostly to those of experience, what are the weird hairstyles you have seen on interview trails?

I am losing hair in the crown area and have been buzzing it at a 0 for a year now. It that ok for the interview? I recognize that I am 22, but how often do you see shaven/really low cut applicants, and what is the impression? From what I remember, since I changed my hairstyle, I got double takes from people. I hope it does not affect an interviewer trying to get to know me.

Should I go completely shaven or do I do the low buzz cut? Thanks🙂

I don't think it matters either way. Just look professional.

If your worried, let it grow, then shave it later.

You might try Minoxidil 5%. The generic is about six bucks a month.

you'll be bald by the end of med school.

I presume you are a man. When I saw the title of this thread, my standard response would be "keep it out of your eyes" but that doesn't seem to be the problem. I've not heard of interviewers taking issue with men's hair styles so I don't think they'll be upset by yours.

Buzz cuts are military standard issue. I don't think you'll ever catch someone calling a soldier unprofessional.

I cannot help you with this problem because I have no hair due to alopecia areata, but I would say a buzz cutt is clean and you cant go wrong with it 😉

Unless you have a tattoo on your scalp, there is nothing wrong with a short buzz cut for interviews.

Like, today I was at the dentist and they take double looks at my head :/ I personally like it nice and close to being shaved, but no shaved completely

You are a "school admin?" Do you see lots of bald interviewers? Whats your impressions of them, does their bald give maturity?

Do a lot of military do the interview as a buzz cut?

they put the dreads in a bunch like a ponytail.

I plan on shaving it to stubble and then dyeing that stubble in a neon green and pink leopard print.
I mean I want to stand out right? Lol

I don't see many balding applicants (I do about 50-100 interviews/yr). I don't see many with close cropped hair, except perhaps some black men.

Most of the military we interview are service academy cadets (West Point, Annapolis, Air Force Academy) or active duty officers and they have short hair but not "new recruit" short.

This will make you stand out.

Yes I plan on it. By next year they should be shoulder/mid back length
Probably similar to this style

Of all the interviews I attended, I did not see a single person with dreads. There is a reason for this. Get rid of the dreads for interviews.

There is no "get rid of dreads for interviews" there is simply "get rid of dreads" and honestly, if I did, id have to rock an itty bitty fro (which may be worse). Btw idk I could attend s school has issues with my wearing my hair naturally... I just can't go there. I can and have bent on a lot but that's just one I can't and won't because if I can't wear dreads most likely braids, twist, curlie fro, cornrows, etc are out also and I'm not wearing a wig/weave or shoving chemicals in my body 🙁

BUT... I understand your POV.

I'm obvs. a lowly pre-med, but I think you should be fine, HipChick. Previous poster was probably thinking of unkempt white girl dreads, which are just gross and lumpy and snarled. Thin, neat dreads that you can put up into a chignon or bun or other updo should be fine; a lot of the professional black women I've met wear their hair in similar ways.

+1.I'm a dude, but i've seen many professionals with dreads. As long as they neat they are professional. you will be absolutely fine.

Buzzing your hair is definitely OK. Quite a few males in my interview groups had buzz-cuts. I don't think I have ever double-taked at a short haircut on a man...

But you will look like every other dude in existence, which may not be a bad thing in med school interviews.

I know at least one dean who who admit an applicant on the spot if he showed up in either of those sports jackets.

And LizzyM causes the "Great Ugly Sports Jacket Shortage of 2012"

So, dreads in a suit? Is that professional?

Curious as to what reasons there are for this.

That the way my hair is naturally could be held against me...There are no words...

It's almost damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Dreads, particularly on a white person, can look a bit nasty so I think that is why someone is saying that one never sees applicants with dreads at interview time. People tend to go out of their way to avoid looking nasty at interview.

That said, hair styles including cornrows, twists and other "natural" hair styles can be quite attractive, neat and tidy.

At risk of coming across as unecessarily combative, I doubt when anyone thinks dreads they think of white people, seeing as white people are less likely to wear their hair in dreads.

But you are right there are ways in which natural afrotype hair can be worn which are attractive neat and tidy. Dreads is one of those ways.

It all depends on where you hang out... the last two people I saw with dreads were white.

Living in Michigan I'm hoping I'll be ok. Whether I wear dreads, braids, twist, they'll look neat. I just don't feel the necessity to straighten my hair 🙁 but MSU has campuses in Macomb and detroit, wayne is in Detroit, flint is popular for family med. so I'll reflect many of the population I hope to treat (if I'm lucky!!) I'll hope to post a non face pic one day 🙂

I have a high and tight myself. Most people find that appealing and I usually get good comments, even though my forehead is a little larger than most, try that if you don't want completely shaven.

lol. I would hate to look poser. I guess I meant the general style of parting the hair on the side.

bwahaha, I think only ryan gosling (or a look-alike) could pull this off w/o looking like a poser.

BTW: To me the "high & tight" looks kinda poser. Like you're wannabe MMA or in the military or something...

Just keep it neat and you will be fine. Don't try to rock a hunger games style rainbow colored wacky hair and you will be ok.

I personally will be rocking a clean taper fade with a line up, and a nicely trimmed and neat beard.

I'm also not a military fan (unless you actually are military), I'm going with the super hero look:

You would figure statistically with how much you post, one of your posts might somehow hold value. Congratulations on beating the odds.

I'm just neurotic with following the verification thread as I'm gonna be verified soon, and I'm trying to be entertaining, but I guess I'm failing. Sorry if I'm not being constructive enough.

edit: either way, I think some people take this forum too seriously.

Wait, that's a bad/poser look? Since I was 15, I've pretty much just combed my hair over to the side, kind of like the picture of gosling (except less good looking, and with shorter hair).

It looks artificially slicked back in the picture is what I was getting at. If you can comb it without it looking too shiny then I'll take back the poser comment.
