It has been six months since the launch of MDapplicants.com, also known as Applicant Profiles on SDN, a collaborative site created by the online community to serve as a guide to prospective premedical students. It currently features 686 profiles, with an average overall GPA of 3.62, science GPA of 3.57, and MCAT score of 31.5. The average applicant is 23.6 years old, applied to 14.0 schools, was invited to 6.1 interviews, and received 2.6 acceptances. Since the launch of the site almost 50,000 visitors have performed over 200,000 searches. Almost 6,000 pages are served every day, constituting over 90 megabytes of information.

I just wanted to briefly make another post to bring its attention to the current wave of applicants, and to appeal to this past year's applicants to add to or update their profiles on the site. Thanks to all who have contributed, and good luck to those applying! 😎

Cheers to a great website! Thanks, xaelia! 😀

Interesting.

According to the AAMC site, the mean MCAT score for matriculating students is 29.7. Yet, MDapplicants.com reports an average MCAT of 31.5 for all applicants. For one reason or another, MDapplicants.com seems to attract data from the upper half of the matriculant pool. I wonder why this data bias should exist.

Any thoughts.

Well, I'm guessing that most of the profiles on mdapplicants.com are those of SDNers. And SDN just happens to attract a pool of applicants who are "on average" either more ambitious or more focused on making effective use of their resources, and therefore probably more prepared to face the process of applying to and be accepted to medical schools. This is not necessarily because of listening to advice they got on SDN, but rather as a result of an inherent drive/love of medicine that would lead them to get hooked on SDN in the first place and anything related to medicine in general....so I think these people who get hooked on SDN and wind up contributing to mdapplicants.com are probably more likely to have character attributes that would lead them to get "hooked" on becoming a good applicant to medical school....if ya know what I mean. I'm now done with my gross generalizations. But anyway I think that's one of the main reasons for this discrepancy. Am I overanalyzing? Yes. Do I care. Ehh, nah. 😀

Whenever it's not explicitly stated as the science GPA, it's the overall GPA.

And, yes, the SDN crowd appears to be a little above average in the numbers category; the amount of time some folks spend on SDN might imply something below the average in social skills, however. 😉 It would be nice to have a more diverse and "average" picture of the applicant pool, as it can be a rather intimidating site for folks to look at.

Your site has proven to be enormously valuable. I have recommended it countless times to people here and mommd.com and will continue to do so. Thanks!
