Half Windsor or WINDSOR?
Started by jakstat33
The half Windsor looks like your trying to be some type of hipster. You might as well wear a leather hat and big sunglasses too.

half-windsor is generally the norm, and it's a lot faster to tie. But if you can tie a good windsor quickly, then just pick whichever knot looks better with that tie.

Trying to infect your patients? I hope you have a pocket full of Trojan brand necktie condoms.

I wouldn't trust a doctor wearing a bow tie.

Am I the only person who doesn't notice how anyone ties their ties? I mean, as long as you're not naked, I don't care HOW you're dressed. I don't even know what a half-Windsor knot looks like. (I just tie my tie like my dad taught me and that's good enough for me.)

kinetic- let me guess, you've also never noticed the arrow in the Fed-Ex logo... c'mon brother, it's all about the simple things in life!
doc05- 4 in hand huh? NICE!

I actually hadn't until last year when someone pointed it out.
P.S. If you classify analyzing tie knots as "the simple things in life," you live in a different world than me. I don't spend my time guffawing when someone uses a Windsor instead of a half-Windsor or vice versa.

Oops, when I said half windsor was the norm, I really meant 4 in hand.
doc05 said:4-in-hand. the windsor and 1/2 are pretentious.
4-in-hand makes you look like you look like Michael J. Fox from 1983 or some clueless highschool student. The full Windsor looks best, but I notice that a lot of ties are too thick and short to tie a proper full Windsor. 🙂
I've had a theory for years. Bowties are a pathognomonic sign for personality disorders. Anyone agree?
I'm a bow tie man myself. I can't stand it when I'm trying to do OMT and my tie gets in the way.
Plus, a study just came out about doctors who wear ties. The study took samples of ties from doctors and then sampled other parts of their clothing. The ties always had funky, rare bacteria growing on them while the other clothes did not. Why? Because ties are hardely ever washed, so having a long tie hanging down could spread disease...
Just an observation. Later!

That's true with the exception being those living along the Mississippi River. While still odd there, it isn't part of a disorder.
4-In-Hand for button down collars. 2x Windsor (fancy name for "Windsor") for collars w/o buttons.

I vote for whichever knot the clip-ons come in.... 😉

I don't have the answer to this question, because I never really knew which knot was which.
Perhaps this will help: www.neckties.com/knots.htm

UCD class of 2001? Me too, man! Sweet!
full windsor for wide (italian) collars.
1/2 windsor for narrower, peaked collars.
collar buttons don't make that much of a difference.
4-in-hand works with most collars, and the slight asymmetry makes it look less 'pretentious.'
bowties are generally reserved for the older physicians with clout; you may offend some people by wearing them.

4-in-hand makes you look like a bum.
1/2 vs full windsor depends on the tie and shirt. Tie has to be long enough and of appropriate thickness for a full windsor. Not to mention the collar type as stated above.
Always go with what looks best, who cares about looking pretentious?
I always look at ties and scoff at 4-in-hands.
Bowties are reserved for neurologists nowadays.

how the hell can a symmetrical knot make someone looks pretentious? that is one of the most ridiculous things i've heard in a while.

it was a slight joke. personally, i would not condone any self-respecting man to be wearing a 4-in-hand unless the tie's really thick..souljah1 said:how the hell can a symmetrical knot make someone looks pretentious? that is one of the most ridiculous things i've heard in a while.
