How does halogenation of anthracene work? There is a question in destroyer that asks how many monobrominated anthracene exist. Is it just like benzene substitution reaction?

The reaction works by the same mechanism as benzene halogenation. An electrophile is captured by the aromatic ring system. The trick is to realize that there are 3 possible sites that the anthracene molecule could be halogenated . A simple Google search can show you the different types of hydrogens that are going to be substituted if you can't see it clearly. The middle 2 sites are the same. If you can see this, look for symmetry in the 2 remaining sites. I have worked out the bromination of anthracene for you.

Hope this helps
