Hello from Portugal!
I am studying Dentistry (now at 3rd grade out of 6) and we need to get an academic kit (cheaper for us students) consisting of a Turbine / 1:1 Contra-Angle / 1:1 Straight Handpiece / Micromotor. At the moment we will use a Borden 2 connection (I assume no light connection, but I prefer buying the light handpieces for future years as a dentist). Yeah yeah, air stuff for us, not electric...
I want to buy a decent kit so that I can use later on the beginning of my practice (in 4 years time including the present, hopefully).
Is KaVo the reference in Handpieces? Even though it is the most expensive kit, I prefer paying now and have a good set that will have more power, is not so loud (compared to others) and is built to last (with proper care).
The kit I'm looking at (preset by KaVo) consists of (it's medium range from KaVo):

- SUPERtorque LUX 660 B (with Light) Turbine -

  • LUX glass rod fibre-optic bundle (25,000 LUX)
  • Quiet, vibration-free operation (62 dB(A))
  • 100° head angle and 18° knee angle for better visual and physical access
  • 18 watt power
  • KaVo original ceramic ball bearings
  • KaVo pushbutton chuck system (32 N retention power)
  • 4 port spray for optimal cooling
  • KaVo MULTIflex coupling system
  • Can be thermally disinfected
  • Can be sterilised in an autoclave at up to 135°C
- INTRAcompact LUX 2068 LHC (with Light) Contra-Angle Handpiece -

  • Max. 40,000 rpm min-1
  • Glass rod fibre-optic bundle
  • Separate internal coolant tubes
  • Pushbutton chuck
  • Debris deflector and strengthened chuck system
  • For use with burs that have a 2.35mm bur shaft diameter
- INTRAcompact 10 CHC Straight Handpiece -

  • Max. 40,000 rpm min-1
  • Separate internal coolant tubes
  • With three-phase voltage for straight and contra-angle handpiece burs
  • Chuck retaining power of 40 N
- INTRAmatic MULTIflex L-Motor 181 M -

  • Speed range: 5,000 - 20,000 rpm
  • For connection to MULTIflex couplings
  • INTRAmatic 2 coolart system
Will this kit be fine? I prefered the GENTLEsilence 8000 Turbine, but it's more expensive... I've also thought about going with the standard INTRAmatic E for both the Contra-Angle and the Straight Handpiece in order to get the GENTLEsilence 8000... Not sure if I'm allowed to exchange items (built-to-order Academic Kit) though.
What is your opinion on all of this? Please help me out making a decision.
Best regards 😀

Have you tried http://www.dentaltown.com? Go to the "Handpieces" forum under the "Equipment" heading. There are thousands of posts there from practicing dentists, so chances are you'll find a few useful posts. I doubt many students on this website are in much of a position to help. For my part I can tell you that StarDental is a POS, but I have no first-hand experience with other brands. KaVo has a good reputation though (obviously).

Going to check that link right away. Thank you.
I thought many people here were already finishing their university studies, and thus had the experience with different brands (I don't know if one class must use the same kit there, over here you buy what you want).
