My hands have been hurting like crazy lately when writing notes. Is there any writing tool to assist? Also, do you guys think cracking your nuckles will bring about arthirtis?
You can try a pen with a thicker body. Sometimes if a pen is too thin, you find yourself squeezing harder with your fingers.
Also, some pens/pencils require you to press hard to write, which might contribute to finger/hand fatigue... You might try switching to pens that write with less pressure, like the Pentel Uni-ball pens.
And last but not least, make sure you periodically stretch your hand, wrist and fingers to their maximum range of motion to prevent repetitive stress injury.
I've had the same problem in the past and I'm worried about the possibility of it worsening in the future. Imagine going through dental school and ending up unable to practice because of severe carpal tunnel syndrome or some similar chronic injury. Not a real pleasant thought...
What happens if a dental student breaks his/her arm skiing or something? They obviously cant do the clinical portion of dental school while healing, so is there some sort of contingency plan in place?
Well, at my school we still have lecture courses during 3rd and 4th years, and my classmate still showed up for those. Next semester, he won't have to show up for the lectures and basically just work in the clinic full-time.
It sucks because he has to pay tuition for those extra semesters.. Ouch! 🙁
So take good care of yourselves while in dental school! 👍
