So I was finishing VCU's secondary online and then I clicked on instructions to just double check. They want us to turn in a 200 word handwritten response on any topic. I wasn't sure exactly I had read this right so I called and they said yep. Anyone else a little confused about this request?

Wow, that sounds crazy weird. I thought graphology was a pseudoscience? Or maybe they just want to make sure your handwriting is legible - but obviously, everyone will be legible on their application, even if they won't be as a practicing physician. So yeah, very nonsensical 😕

yeah to me it seemed like they wanted me to jump thru some more hoops.... im going to look like i write like a 8 year old. I write with block print.

i wonder if a lot of people are going to miss reading this in the directions cuz it wasn't explicitly written out. you had to actually dig thru the instructions which puzzled me.

They want to know you could write a beautiful script some day and not kill the patient with the wrong med. Rather smart of them if you ask me. RARRRRRRRRRRRR

I'm not gonna lie - I really get a kick out of this whole Howard Dean thing (and it's not only because I am a GW Bush supporter).

If I recall, you don't write anything down and just store all kinds of patient info in your head, and let your subconscious deal with it, right?

This would be a terrific idea if paper wasn't going to be obsolete by 2013.

The instructions on that page say to print out and send in the in-state tuition form, but the form itself just says to do it if you wanna claim in-state.

No point in bothering with it if we're not Virginians, right?

not too sure about this, cuz when I called it seemed like it was expected of me, a non-Virginian resident to do it. I too was puzzled by the instate thing. ill post their answer when I call tomorrow.

hey guys.... just have a question about the essay. im totally stuck on it and just wanted to see what direction you guys went in.... are we expected to go into further detail with something from the amcas personal statement? write about an extra curricular? why we want to go to vcu? what our favorite ice cream flavor is??
i dont like having too much freedom with these things, esp when its only 200 words. its been staring me in the face for the past week and a half and i just dont know what to write about!!

i say old chap, just choose something. for me it was to explain what I plan on doing the next few months- as in working as EMT.

Is anyone else having problems logging into the VCU status page? I've been having problems since last night, and I keep getting "your ID or psswd isn't found". It's possible I forgot my password, but every time I click the "forgot psswd" button, it says "database error". ::sigh::

i called this morning to ask about the handwritten response and they said it was mandatory for all applicants- that includes you, non Virginian resident, haha.

but to answer you question too tinkerbelle - the system was down for a bit, as they were updating things but it shoud be back up right now.

I wrote something along the lines of what my favorite ice cream flavor was. I figured if I'm given the freedom to write about anything, they probably want to hear about whatever it is I want to write about.

green tea? hell your essay will be a lot more interesting than mines..

thanks for the input everyone! i was kind of going the 'ice cream flavor' route if only b.c i dont have any really impressive or interesting things planned for this upcoming year [i.e. emt] and all of my really good patient experiences i kind of discussed in the amcas.... mint chocolate chip. 197 to go.

I'm writing about the blood diamond industry in West Africa, its my focus within my international studies major. I want to be able to discuss this topic at my interview (assuming I receive one) so I figure I'd write a brief overview.

That's a good idea. i just wrote about why I wanted to go to VCU. 200 words is not very much, and goes by surprisingly quickly, so I wouldn't sweat it too much.

so let me get this straight...there are no guidelines for this essay? 200 words...i guess ill write about my love for fried chicken.

I figure writing about something that's not too serious is to our advantage because it gives you something non-academic to talk about if you get interviewed; kind of an ice-breaker or stress-free topic with which you are comfortable. I wrote about The Beatles.

When I applied to Columbia a while back they also asked for a handwritten essay. I took the paper application (which had no lines) and placed a piece of notebook paper behind it and wrote it on a overhead projector (the bright light shines through so that you can use the lines on the notebook paper to make it look neater). Just try not too stare too long into the overhead light.

i used a black marker and ruler to 'highlight' the lines on lined paper so you can see the lines through white computer paper. now that im set up, all i need is an essay.... hmmmmmm 🙂

Are we supposed to print or use cursive? I suppose "handwritten" could be either?

yeah i think it's supposed to be anything goes as long as its handwritten, not typed.
