Happy LECOM Students - Give feedback Please.

I interviewed at LECOM recently. I was going to cancel, but I had not yet heard from UHS Mo. I received the UHS Letter of Acceptance yesterday, but I really got a good feeling from LECOM, and the town of Erie so now I'm undecided.

The different strings that talk about LECOM on this website paint a picture of a good curriculum, but frustrated, unhappy students due to administration policies.

Is it that bad? Are there LECOM students or alumni out there that can say something good about the school? I liked LECOM, but my experience was only 4 hours plus the overnight stay in town. I'm active duty military now, so the dress code isn't a big deal. What about the rest of the program? Any feedback would be appreciated, positive or negative.

LECOM is what you make of it. The policies are only a "problem" if you let them be. There's not much more I can say about it. Let's just say that many of them aren't as enforced as LECOM admin. would lead you to believe.

I'm far from unhappy. I'm in PBL. I go to school twice a week, only more if I feel like it, and I study in my pajamas. I'm pretty sure nobody's got it better than I do! 🙂

We all complain about LECOM, but I am genuinely happy that I decided to attend the school. I am more happy now that I am in my clinical years, because I now see that although LECOM may be hard to deal with at times with the rules and the Ferretti-land atmosphere, they really do give us a good education. I have had attendings on most of my rotations so far compliment LECOM and the education we receive. I have felt like LECOM prepared me very well for the clinical years.

I definitely agree with Dr_sax - LECOM is what you make of it.

I really do love LECOM. If you have already interviewed at LECOM, then you know about the dress code and attendance policies. The administration doesn't hide these policies from interviewees, and really, the policies don't make that much difference in the grand scheme of things. The education is wonderful, and I feel very prepared to enter into the clinical realm this summer. In my 1 1/2 years here, I have spoken to Dr. Silvia and Dr. John once, and both of those conversations were pleasant and professional. The only thing that I can tell you is that they have put one h#ll of a school together, and I can't imagine being anywhere else.

I also agree with hermione... studying in your pajamas is a great way to go!!!

how is the weather there?? I've been told that it's much like detroit but colder. also how are the surrounding areas, is there much to do? how about the rotations? where are they done at and how early is patient contact? sorry for all the questions but I have been considering putting lecom on my list of schools.

Today isn't the best day to talk about the weather... we've had a bit of a cold snap this week. Generally speaking, the weather in January and February can best be summed up by the word "snowy". There are a few nicer days in March and April. We had very little snow in November or December this year, so overall, it will be a pretty short winter for us.


We are about 90 minutes from Cleveland and the Buffalo/Niagara Falls area. Pittsburgh is 2 hours away. In Erie, we have an amusement park, an indoor waterpark, Presque Isle, a comedy club, and a number of restaurants and bars.

Lecom has over 70 affiliate hospitals for rotations. You can choose rotation sites from any of the following areas: Erie, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, NYC, Ohio, Michigan, Florida, and Philadelphia.

As far as patient contact goes, I can only speak for the PBL program. During the MSI year, PBLers learn to take H&P's during a weekly class. This program is designed to mimic the new COMLEX Practical exam format. During the MSII year we have placed IV's and performed blood draws at local hospitals. In addition, we are required to perform 3 H&P's at Millcreek Hospital and we shadow a physician at the VA hospital. In addition, we learn to perform gynecological exams, male genitalia exams, and eye exams through the CODA program. If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me. Good luck with your decision.
