Happy Ramadan everyone!

Anyone here studying for the MCATs/med school etc while fasting? 😀

I kind of like it because I think I'm more efficient and get less distracted during this month.

One of my friends failed biochem because of ramadan... lol

If my understanding is correct you can only eat at night and before dawn correct?

How are you less distracted without glucose for your brain...? I eat every 2 hours

Well it's good that it started now because it's still two weeks until school starts. but yeah...ramadan mubarak!

Thanks! And I'm studying for the mcats and fasting 🙂 it's definitely alot easier this way (for me at least), I find I can focus better and retain alot of what I'm studying.

Okkk I'm anemic and it's no hassle for me. Unless he plays sports then that's a different story. Tell him to actually EAT lots of food before dawn, like lots of bread, and trust me he'll start to feel better. It's definitely harder in the summer because sunset isn't till 8 but if anyone feels weak either they need to eat right before dawn or check with a doctor if they should even be fasting at all (like diabetics, pregnant women, people with certain vitamin deficiencies etc). But then again there are those who just can't deal with not being able to snack every few hrs - but if they're in their 20s they should he used to it by now🙁 just my opinion.

Ramadan Mubarak to all you out there!
I'm also studying for the MCAT while fasting. I'm basically sleeping in 2 3-hour blocks. After Sahoor, I'll sleep from approximately 5-8, and in between Asr and Maghrib from 5-8 in the evening. I'll study for the MCAT after Taraweeh from 12-3. It will be a grind, but after Ramadan, it is all downhill from there. Good luck with everyone's fasts.

For one I am forced to wake up before dawn and eat a large breakfast. So I get to study in the morning (early, early morning) when it's completely quiet. It's very efficient studying in the morning vs later in the day.

Also, one's blood glucose level remains relatively constant (assuming a large breakfast was consumed) until later in the day (around 5 to 6ish). When we snack/eat our blood glucose level spikes up and deters our concentration actually. So from 5 AM-4 PM studying is very effective unless of course one does strenuous physical activity in which case a meal would be necessary much earlier.

Question: would a gift tin of dates be an appropriate gift from a non-Muslim man to a Muslim family during Ramadan? If so, when should it be delivered to the home? (only after sunset? anytime during Ramadan? only at Eid Al-Fitr?)

Finally, LizzyM asks for advice!
A gift is a gift, you can give whatever and give it whenever. There aren't any "special rules" non-Muslims need to follow. And the tin of dates isn't out of the norm, either.

my advice would be before eid because a lot of muslims use dates to open their fast at sunset. Give it to them the next time you see 'em.

Gift of dates would be the MOST appropriate gift for a muslim family during Ramadan, and it should be delivered slightly before sunset so that they can include this in their dinner aka "Iftar" which they are preparing 🙂

Dates make my throat swell up like crazy. I always feel left out 🙁

Same here! And back in high school i used to participate with all of the other kids--running, weight lifting etc, I take my supplements right after "breakfast" its not that hard. And I actually have a week til school starts but its been great so far, the first day is the hardest for me but after that its a breeze 😎

LizzyM, you can give whatever you want. From a box of donuts to a tin of dates, we appreciate anything. Ramadan Karim! Also, I had to quit soccer last year cause Ramadan started the same day as the season. 😀

I think we are all in the same boat here. Happy Ramadan!

Many thanks. Your advice was requested on behalf of my dad who wishes to honor a friend (a physician coincidentally) who was my dad's tenant while in residency. I appreciate your helpful comments and I have passed them along to Dad.

:soexcited: Ramadan Mubarak! :soexcited:

I am so glad there is a thread to honor this wonderful time 🙂. I hope everyone's fast is going well. For some reason, I kept craving double fudge brownie ice cream during the day, but since I bought it, no other distracting food thoughts . As others have said, I also find myself more efficient during this period, but only until about 5 PM, at which point my attention span starts going (which is okay because I normally don't get much work done after this time anyway 🙄).

:luck: I wish all my Muslim brothers and sisters the best during this season, and may Allah grant all your wishes. Good luck to everyone applying to medical school this year:xf:

I have ingeniously devised a plan where I stay up all night then eat a huge mean and go to sleep 6 in the morning and wake up around 5pm. After that only 3 hours I need to endure

Really...you sleep for 11 hours? I already do that but I wake up at around 1pm. I guess it works...but my body doesn't really require too many calories anyways.

yeah dude its summer. My average sleep time in the summer is either 11 or 12 hours unless I have the dreaded volunteer day where I have to wake up early.

Ramadan Mubarak, and for my south asian friends out there "ramzan mubarak". Hope you guys are enjoying the fruit chat and samosas, and good luck to everyone with their fasts, MCATs, and medical school applications.

Studying for the test and fasting here.

Man, I woke up late today and had like 5 minutes to eat, so I only had like a pancake and a cup of coffee....no water/fruits/vegetables, massive headache right now.

Ramadan Mubarak everyone, God willing, it is going well for everyone.

The hunger pain really kicks in with like 15 mins till sunset. I keep on checking the time around then...haha.

Yeah, I usually feel really nauseous about an hour before sundown, I don't feel hungry, but I just feel like puking the emptiness of my stomach.

I would try that but it's the summer. I would wake up ridiculously thirsty and probably die.
