HOW WOULD YOU SOLVE THE HEALTH CARE CRISIS??

"Although I am not in a position to completely address this problem, and there are many different issues that contribute to what people call 'the health care crisis,' there are a few things that I believe should be considered for change, if they could be practically changed. For example, if it were possible to allow more widespread access to the healthcare system, many related problems could be reduced..."

I might start it out like that, but who knows...

I wouldn't make it out like you are reading an essay.... I don't think there is a right answer - talk about what problems you see, and what you might do if you are in charge. An interview is about getting to know who you are, and how you answer a question like this gives a lot of insight into your priorities, as well as how up to speed you are....

If there was a simple answer, there wouldn't be a healthcare crisis, its all about being informed about the problems and some measures you think would be beneficial.

I think it's best to find one thing about the "health care crisis" that you think could be fixed or that you find interesting. I like to talk about the material and equipment costs, but maybe you could pick some social, economic, political, or technological aspect of the crisis and roll with that.

More than likely you'll answer the question to the satisfaction of the interviewer and maybe it'll lead to another subject you're more comfortable with!

and don't be afraid to say "i don't know." i think adcoms much prefer that you're aware of the problems but not fake a response or wing your way through an answer. or pretend that you know it all. one of the panel members that interviewed me at u of washington said that she's always wary when someone comes in with a "solution" to solve the health care crisis.

I think that many of the problems with our current healthcare system are a result of high healthcare cost due to medical malpractice and its leading to defensive medical practices and the inadaquate distribution of healthcare in the US.

As a possible solution I think that there needs to be legal reform of our healthcare system. However, more importantly, I think that people need to be more responsible and educated about their own healthcare. Expanding the number of primary care physicians to perform routine diag and prevention of disease is key to solving the problem. Society as a whole need to understand that lifestyle choices of smoking, drinking, drug use, eating big mac and not exercising will carry serious consequences in the future.

I definately got that question in one of my interviews

... basically talk about areas of potential change and their pros/cons. (ie: show them that it is a tricky problem with conflicting solutions that you have weighed and thought about.)

There is no real "right answer" to this question ... just show 1) that youve thought about it and 2) that you understand that there may exist difficult problems that might have no optimal solution
