Hardcore Spectroscopy?

I was wondering how bad would the questions get for spectroscopy... I mean I'm pretty horrible at NMR spectroscopy (and a little with UV). Would they really go hardcore on the real test or would they ask simple questions? Also, is it really necessary to know how each spectroscopic method works (the light bending and the excited states)? My lecture teachers tested on us on applying the methods, not how each works.
