When finding the dominant phenotype why do you add P^2 with 2pq? Why is the heterozygous also dominant? Is this just a rule you need to know?

Thanks
Let me ask you this, is a person with Qq show the traits of Q? the answer is yes. So clearly, heterozygous person shows dominant traits.

By the rules of complete dominance in which the dominant allele will be expressed over the recessive, an organism with a heterozygous genotype will express dominant traits.

Ex: If P is for purple flowers and p is for white flowers, Pp will demonstrate dominant color purple.
