Not to obssess, but if my app has been completed for months w/out any contact from Harvard (and some others--Stanford, Duke, UMich), does that mean I'm basically out of the playing field? I've heard that Stanford, at least, will send me a rejection when they reject me, but will Harvard let me know immediately if they decide I'm not under consideration any more, or do they wait until regular decisions are mailed out later in the spring? What about Duke and UMich?

Umich asks everyone for a secondary and 25% (I believe) for letters of rec. If you got a request for letters of rec then you are in good shape 🙂
Plus Grasshopper, haven't you gotten into some great places..I am sure these places will be on their hands and knees for you soon enough 🙂
Good luck!

Normally you can expect a rejection from Harvard at the end of February. But this year, who knows...

Harvard doesnt send out any rejections until they send out their acceptances.

I'm pretty sure that Duke will let you know if you are rejected as soon as their decision is made.

Duke rejects some of its applicants after submission of secondary. If you check their status page and they haven't rejected you, then you are still in good shape. They do not let interviewees know about acceptance/rejection until March. But like everyone says who knows this year!

Okay, this is all based on last year's information, but I doubt things have changed that substantially. Harvard sends out rejections at the end of it's season when it sends out acceptances. Duke and Stanford reject as they go along. Stanford typically has a very long interview season (up through March or April I think), so I wouldn't be too worried. In previous years Harvard and Duke stopped interviewing in late winter.

Lilycat again saves the day as the provider of every little tidbit. Really, I don't know why you, an utterly superior MSI, deign to frequent our silly little forum. Anyway, thanks all of you for the info. Harvard has no online status check of any sort, right? Also, will Stanford's online thing tell me if my app is no longer under consideration or, alternatively, if I have an interview?
