SDN'ers,

I was wondering if anyone was applying to both the New Pathway program and the Harvard-MIT collaboration program. I have looked into both on the websites and stuff, but I was just wondering if it was common for ppl to apply to both, and their reasons as to why? I mean, does it look weird for someone to apply for both programs?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

I applied to both, and I dont think its weird either. Its probably very common among those interested in research/academia.

I'm not applying to Harvard. 🙂

I only applied to New Pathway... I worked for HST this summer, and didn't like a lot of the people I met in it. It seems that if you don't want to do research, don't go to HST. I think 40% or so of them are MD/PhD.

Yes, the HST program has been populated with MD-PhDs in the past few years, but this is a new trend. It used to be a fairly even distribution from what I hear...

See, but if you apply to both programs, then how can you convey to the adcoms that you are really interested in research? if so, why wouldn't you just apply to the harvard-mit program as opposed to both? This is the dilemma that I see...any help would be appreciated! 🙂🙂

Ice, I think it might look weird, indecisive, or desperate if you apply to both. And if you do, I don't think they consider your application twice or anything - their admissions process is very single-elimination. Like, if MD PhD applicants don't get in as a regular MD candidate first, they are automatically rejected from MD PhD. So, by analogy it seems that if you were rejected from one program they would just stop considering your application altogether. I could certainly be wrong, but I would only apply to one or the other.

Agreed. Plus, if you're really *THAT* interested in research, why don't you just apply to the MD-PhD program to begin with? It's not applying to any one particular program ceases your ability to find a job in a research lab...
