To follow in the footsteps of UOP, it's time for the HSDM Class of 2009 to have their own thread. Come out of the shelterbelts (a wooded area surrounding farm houses) and show yourselves! 😉 I'll even give us a topic to discuss: FEAT or FUNC?

I signed up for FEAT because I plan to dominate the White Mountains and bspeedy00.

Also, what are your feelings on a dodgeball tournament in Vandy Hall? Ever since I saw that basketball court, it's all I have been able to think about.

p.s. Does my avatar show up? When I tried to download it, SDN said it had troubles uploading my image but I can see it. 😕

I didn't apply to harvard, but my brother will.
Just wonder for his sake, if you are selected for an interview at Harvard, what percentage are you possibly in?

Congrats on your acceptances...and to answer the previous question. They generally interview 100-120 students and fill a class of 35, so at the very least he has a 1/3 chance.

Do you go to harvard?

Oh wow, I didn't know it's that hard to get accepted into Harvard, considering the class is so small. I guess that's why Harvard has such a good matching rate since their class is so tiny.

What kind of people does Harvard look for? Can someone tell me the GPA range, DAT scores, what kind of extracurricular activities someone needs to attained to be considered harvard material...?

It also helps that they are on the Pass/Fail system.

I sure do. I have a permanent bump above my right eye to prove it.

FYI, I took my first spinning class on Monday. Decent workout except it took several days for my butt to recover, but I should be back on the bike by Monday.

To the person asking about what Harvard looks for in an applicant: I have no idea what the GPA and DAT range are. Historically speaking, their average GPA and DAT scores have been fairly high. But that doesn't necessarily mean you need a high GPA and DAT to gain admission. After meeting the people I interviewed with, I would say that they look for well-rounded applicants, not just science-oriented people (a common misconception). Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Harvard also looks for people that are ridiculously, ridiculously good looking. Oh, ****, I am so pumped you are tryin the cycling thing! You rock!

I was so psyched to see that they offer FUNC--what a nice way to start off dental school!

I read on their dental web site that their average GPA is 3.7, so one can get in with a 3.5 I guess....

I like the pass/fail system!

I'm good looking 😀 so maybe I'll have a chance! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, definitely. You're a shoe-in, especially if your children are attractive as well.

cherry22, are you Vandy-ing it?

And to any current HSDM student: do you know when we'll hear something about our financial aid packet? Do you remember when you got your info (June, July?) when you were starting up?

sanks a bunch,
DRAT!

prior to orientation, first year dental and med students can participate in these two optional programs. FEAT is a week long camping/hiking trip into the white mountains, and FUNC is a community service project in an urban environment.

These are two, weeklong pre-orientation activities available for incoming students. (They are optional and offered at the same time, so you have to chose one or the other if interested.)

First-year Educational Adventure Trip (FEAT) - a five-day backpacking trip in the White Mountains of New Hampshire

First-year Urban Neighborhood Campaign (FUNC) - weeklong service-learning program offering the opportunity to work daily with a local community organization

whats going on future classmates. Id love to go with FUNC, but one of my best buddies is getting married during one of those days.... anyways, just wanted to say hey...laters

As one of you future classmates, I respectfully request that you never use the word "laters" again....just reminds me of this crack head on here that ran his mouth day and night

eek, not sure, but my educated guess is "yes." any current students know??

what do you play?? i hope they have IM fishing.

oops, just realized that I said I was doing FUNC. I'm doing FEAT! (hey, it was late and during finals...)

Can't wait to explore the White Mountains!

I know they have a Taekwondo Club, I remember seeing a poster for it in Vandy. I'm pretty sure there were other IM sport postings, but I can't remember specifics.

Speedy -- are you going to ditch running? Am I going to have to run my 5 min miles by my lonesome along the Charles River? 😛

P.S. Did you see Andrew C.'s (U of Minn) time for the 10K? That's my boy! (Well, used to be my boy. 😉 )

I wont ditch running, but after 9 years of track and field, I am taking a little break from it for the summer. I will join you running in the fall if you come ride with me on the indoor bikes on occasion 🙂 . Oh and ya I saw Andrews 10k time, his 5k time is friggen great too (he broke the u of Minn school record too!)

Attn current HSDM students:

I will be living off campus and would like to know what areas current students live. I will not have a car so I need to be near public transportation. The same is true for my roommate, who will need to commute to Kenmore Square. Areas under consideration are:

Brookline Village
Coolidge Corner
Washington Square?
Cleveland Corner?

BV and Cool.Cor. seem to be within walking distance to HSDM and I've been to both areas and feel comfortable there. What about WS and Cleve.Cor.? Are those areas nice? Are they less than a 15 min. commute away from the school? Sorry for the 20 questions. I'm pretty much a ***** when it comes to big city living and relying on public transportation.

And what about price? We're looking to spend $800/month max on rent apiece. BV and Cool.Cor. might be too pricey for us??

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'm completely up for dodgeball! Did any of the people living in Vandy get a notice that the elevators aren't going to be working for part of the year? Someone on the pre-med forum got one I think, so it made me kind of wonder if I should check to make sure they received my Vandy application. I can't wait to meet everyone this fall. Where are you all from?
